In this quick tutorial I am going to show you, how to add some character to your photos by using film grain. This effect is going to give your pictures a cinematic look.
In my example pictures I've turned the grain a bit too high as you may have noticed, that's the reason, why it doesn't look good at all, but if you keep it decent, then you will get a good result.
- Start Photoshop and create a new file with the picture you want to have the film grain on.
- Add a new layer, IMPORTANT: The layer should be grey, hex code is #808080.
- Convert the new layer into a Smart object (right click on layer -> "Convert into a smart object).
- Put the layer mode of the added layer to overlay, so the layer shouldn't be visible anymore.
- Now add the grain (Filter -> Noise filter -> Add noise)
- The chosen amount depends on the size of your picture. For reference, the example picture had a size of 3264x1616 and I took the amount 12, which was obiously a little bit too high.
Normally I would've taken an amount like 6-8.
- Also put a tick on monochromatic - this will make your noise black/white instead of colourish.
- And there you go, you're done. 🤗
I hope you liked the quick tutorial. If there are any questions, feel free to ask me about it. 😉
