I have been playing around with installation of various linux distros too and have discovered something recently that helped me with seemingly, the same problem. also, I forgot I had admin a password on the bios when I got the lappy, and later, when tried to change settings, i couldnt. so dont know if that helps
I just figured out my problem at not loading grub as due to improper selection of the partition. I have a 250 GB drive, and on that I can select /dev/sda ... iirc. If I create multiple partitions, I get a tree to select from like this.
something something PNY satalll 240GB something something (identifier information)
/dev/sda1
/dev/sda2
So what I was doing, was taking a formated ssd and creating multiple partitions in the installation process. then selecting the specific /dev/sda1 option... every time after installation I would get the: could not install grub boot loader ... something something error.
So what I did once I figured this out, was formated the drive, and then installed the OS, then partitioned the left over for the next OS. that said, when I am to select the drive and the boot loader, of course I'm to install into root, but with that just the first option on the drive list. I really don't know why or what yet, but I got it to work for me finally. I am running three OS atm on a tri boot machine while learning. as of yet I havent installed the other two OS since the last install of Ubuntu.
IDK why it doesnt like me selecting the specific partition, I have to research what was really going on to fully understand it. Its easy to install one OS but when you try to get three, and then in a specific order in the boot list... lol.
