This will be for beginners as we might as well start from the start.
I will be using VirtualBox as I personally prefer it over VMware. This will all be for Windows however the steps are similar for mac.
Step 1,
Download VirtualBox from here - depending on when you see this thread, it might be best to download from the website itself as the direct download will be outdated.
Website: https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads
Direct Download: https://download.virtualbox.org/virtualb...60-Win.exe
Step 2,
Download Kali Linux from here - We will be using the prebuilt images for ease of use.
Website: https://www.offensive-security.com/kali-...-download/
32-Bit Direct Download: https://images.offensive-security.com/vi...x-i386.ova
64-Bit Direct Download: https://images.offensive-security.com/vi...-amd64.ova
To identify which OS you are running (32 bit or 64 bit) - Please hold down the windows key on your keyboard + press the "Pause" button by your numpad (above arrow keys).
This will open "Control Panel\System and Security\System".
If it says anything other than 64-bit then it will be 32 bit. (such as x86 or 32)

Once you have downloaded and installed VirtualBox and you have also downloaded the Kali Linux image you should have a file like so in your downloaded directory.

You can now choose to double click the file and wait for VirtualBox to open it or you can open it inside VirtualBox like so

Now that you have imported it - You can highlight it and click start.

If you get this error:

You will need to either disable usb 2.0 or install the extension pack. I will simply be disabling usb 2.0
You can disable USB 2.0 by clicking the settings button at the top left corner, going down to USB and clicking USB 1.1 in the radio box (then OK)

Now you can go ahead and click Start again.
Once it starts up in a machine environment, just leave it to run otherwise press if you don't want to wait the 3 seconds for boot options. You will be greeted with a Username screen.
Enter the username: root
Enter the password: toor
This will bring you to your new desktop environment.

This will be Part 1 in the in depth tutorials for Kali Linux. We will be looking at most of the pre-installed tools and how we can use them.
Part 2 will contain "01 - Information Gathering" where we will discuss the following pre-installed tools.
