(Jan 13, 2019 04:14 AM)RealyWhite Wrote: What do you do as a Software Engineer? Well like the name allready tells you most of us are creating software solutions and fix bugs. In my Company the time is splitted like this: 40% creating new solutions 30% fixxing bugs 20% implementing unnessesary feature because we get paid to do so 10% Projekt Managment + Communication (Sometimes up to 30% percent of our time) It depends on the Company and your role in it. Yeah you should know all basics in your language and much more if you want to work as a professional developer. The best would be to seek a specific programming job and search for the requirements to get it. Then you will see what you need to know. Stuff I do at my job:
- implementing business requirements (writing new code to add new features) - refactoring older code so it isn't shit - fixing bugs - Pager Duty (every couple months I get to maybe get woken up at 3am for some shit that may or may not have went down) - Tow Truck (where other teams complain to us and we tell them to go fuck themselves, unless the problem they're reporting isn't just them forgetting to renew an auth ticket) - unit tests. Fucking unit tests. Necessary, but the worst part about being a software developer. - versioned software deployments The shit I need to know how to do: - Use jenkins - Use AWS to manage running instances of api's (and also to get logs) - Programming in Scala and Java - Use IntelliJ IDE - Use Maven build tools - Use Scala Build Tools (Scala is a JVM language) - Understand how dependency injection apis work - Must know how to write automated tests - Need to know Ruby so I can work with automated QA tests - And more!
