Well, as you know, Thanos had finally gathered all six Infinity Stones and snapped his fingers to erase exactly 50% of all life in the universe. That action itself just took out people at random, no particular reason. But I wouldn't look too far into it, it's not because he's a useless character though. Spider-Man is a favorite amongst loads of comic book fans everywhere. I think maybe it was because if he had survived the snap then he wouldn't really play much of a "desperate" role of trying to undo the Thanos-finger-snap like what's to be in Endgame.
