You can do this by using String.Contains and/or parsing in a constant loop

This would be the naive way to do it. Language syntax is much more than just word parsing. Context plays a role in the highlighting as well, so this task is usually done by lexical parsing/analysis. You might also want to consider Regex if you're not willing to do all of that manually; this may solve basic language syntax highlighting problems as a minimum viable product approach.

Regex is probably slow and inefficient in this case and I was only mentioning Contains and Parsing in order to pick out particulars, i.e variables and other expressions being highlighted differently

Slow by what measure? Who writes Mb's worth of batch scripting? It'll be far more versatile than what you've suggested. Additionally SublimeText uses Regex for their language definitions for the syntax highlighting.
Contains() also won't be based on word boundaries, meaning it will catch keywords within other text which is probably not what you want, so Regex is already a more appropriate suggestion. Your suggestion was flawed from the start.
The only real way to achieve this though is through lexical analysis.
