Where to get macOS Sierra

I have this old macbook that I'm trying to give some new life to since the battery is still rather good in it. The plan is to throw in a new SSD since I have several of them here and they are literally just collecting dust. However the issue now is that I can't seem to find the installation files (iso or what ever name it goes by with apple)...all the instructions that I find refer to the App Store and then says that macOS Sierra should be donwloaded from there...fine, I have found it in the store but I'm unable to download it from there, when I hit "Get" literally nothing happens and I can't seem to find a workaround for it either.

Any suggestions?

Some details
MacBook (late 2009)
Mac OS X 10.6.8
I encountered the case some years ago, so I made a Time Machine save, and then when I boot my Mac I had an option to copy the time machine save to the new disk
Can't you just command + R during boot and use the installer/reinstaller via boot? If you have an Ethernet connection it should also download the newest possible OS from Apple(this is what i've done many times at work).

As I said, I'm throwing in an SSD which obviously means that it's blank so there's no recovery or anything like that.

Ah yes idk why i didn't realize the recovery partition is on the installed drive and not built into the board.

You could go the time machine route or i guess potentially using a drive clone tool and just cloning either the whole drive over or clone it for the the recovery partition.

In order to get the iso, you need to download the image from another macbook/imac etc that supports that version.
Example: (For Mojave) https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/How+to+inst...acs/115162
