What is Cannon Busters?

So for those who don't know what Cannon Busters is - it is an anime that's only available on Netflix and has only 12 episodes. The creator LeSean Thomas was a co-director of the original Adult Swim show, "The Boondocks". If you have ever watched "The Boondocks, you can definitely see a similar influence (bad language, sexual innuendos, etc.) when watching this show.

Without giving too much of the story away, it revolves around two robots (SAM and Casey) who are searching for a fugitive named Philly the Kid (who cannot die), all while being on the run from some unsavory characters who are trying to capture them. Their mission is to get to Gara's Keep to reunite with an old friend (who happens to be a prince and best friend of SAM) and they believe that Philly the Kid can help them get there to safety. Philly the Kid also owns a Pink Cadillac-looking car named Bessie, which has a driving system akin to an arcade system that you need to feed quarters to drive the car or transform it into a giant bull robot. There's also other characters that are part of the plot, like an old samurai named 9ine whose skill is the stuff of legends and the king's knight who tries to keep the group (and the prince) together while they make their way to Gara's Keep after their kingdom has been attacked.

As they journey and make their way over there, hilarity ensues and they find themselves meeting other crazy characters who want to kill them or just be annoying. The goal takes a backseat while the journey is in the spotlight, showing each individual's private agenda in wanting to reach Gara's Keep (some agendas involve killing out of revenge or simply needing a change in their lives).

Acting/Characters

I like the diversity in anime (most of the characters are black!) and so that itself is a plus.  🤗

Philly the Kid -  An immortal on a quest for revenge. The actor definitely fits the character but I wish they could go into his backstory a little more. He also looks like a black version of Spike Spiegel from Cowboy Bebop.

Casey Turnbuckle - A robot who is looking for a purpose. Not much depth into this character.

SAM - A naive robot looking to make friends and find their best friend, the prince. Same situation as Casey, not much depth into their character. They just have an end goal and not much room for anything else.

Would I recommend watching the anime?

If you've been a fan of The Boondocks and 90's and early 2000's anime (specifically Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Samurai Champloo) then I definitely would give this a chance. The opening and ending themes are fantastic and catchy to listen to, the animation is quite good (save for some CGI parts where the bull robot is fighting or in the scenes) and it really plays on the nostalgic feel of older and cult classic anime.

Also, did I mention that the opening theme is a bop?

Looks pretty interesting if I'm being honest. Hadn't thought much of it after a short glance on the Netflix browse, but think I'll give it a try. That OP is great!

Looks alright. Might have to give it a watch.
