Anyone use multiple monitors with mixed refresh rates?

I have 2 monitors, a gaming monitor at 1440p and 165 hz and a cheap crappy monitor at 900p and 60hz.
It's causing stuttering on my 165hz monitor sometimes and causes freezes. If I disable the second monitor the issue goes away.
Is this due to the mixed refresh rate or does it always happen on multi-monitor setups?

EDIT: It seems to happen whenever something happens on my second screen. If I open testufo.com on my 60hz panel my 165hz panel will also start running at 60hz.
What you are describing is a very common issue. Messing with drivers until you find the magic working version sometimes works, but not always. Disabling the second monitor when it's not in use is by far the most effective solution even though not ideal.

Unfortunately this is the most cost effective method of dealing with these issues. Nvidia drivers are aweful when it comes to this although I will say that AMD does offer better driver tools when it comes to refresh rates using multiple monitors but in time they will probably update their drivers seeing how more and more people are using multiple monitors.

On a side note, they haven't even fixed scaling properly throughout the years and are still figuring it all out.

I did some research, it appears to be Windows's VSYNC which causes the issue. Windows 7's basic theme does not use vsync which means both monitors run at full framerate all the time.

I also heard AMD GPUs do not have this issue, unfortunately I cannot confirm this as I only have my Nvidia GPU and my integrated intel. I tried my main monitor in my GTX 1080 and the 60hz one in my integrated graphics, it didn't change anything.

It's a shame, I wanted this second monitor so I'd have extra space. Luckily it's just an old crappy monitor.

If you are running Windows 7 that's an entirely different issue all together. Drivers are only expected to work, not be wonderful on the old OS.

I am not, that's just what I read, that Windows 7's basic theme does not use DWM which means it does not have this issue. Of course we cannot change that in anything newer.
