Is there any software to tap a landline just by the phone number without using any hardware, tools or gadgets?

There are several apps and pieces of software around that can do this. I'm fairly sure that tapping on others phone is blackhat activity, so I can't step by step it for you. A quick Google search will point you in the right direction.

I'm no Kevin Mitnick, but I was curious if you were able to intercept with software wouldn't that fall under VOIP and not LAN? A LAN line is usually something more of a direct connection which justifies the need for gadgets etc. But with how diverse telephone companies are these days, offering their internet bundles, and the "use wifi" options for some carriers, it certainly is an interesting topic I'd like to know more about.

Lookup cain and able. This software was originally designed for landline tapping and should support the protocol. You could probably find an updated version
