Comcast

Sorry if this is the wrong section, feel free to move if so.

So I sat on the phone for over an hour with Comcast, mainly just waiting to get an actual human to speak to and they are telling me they CAN'T change my IP address, and that the only way to change it is to leave my router unplugged for...a fucking week?

Does that even make sense? Like 10 years ago when I played a ton of competitive COD I'd get DDoS'd daily and I'd simply call and ask for a new IP and they'd do it.

Ever since we got our gigabit internet and we got this new trash 2 in 1 router/modem I can't change my IP on my own by changing a letter/number in my MAC address in my router.

There is for sure no reason as to why they can't change my IP right? There is no way leaving my router unplugged for a WEEK is the only way, I've already called twice and talked to 4 different people all saying the same thing.

What should I do? Is there some way I don't know of to simply change my IP (Excluding VPN's or anything, i want my actual IP changed without using a VPN)
Well you have a static address so no you cannot just unplug your modem to change it. I am unsure of why they wouldn't be able to do though. I'd call back with a better excuse to why you need to change it and I bet they will

My excuse was I was getting DDoS'd, which I think is a pretty valid excuse, no?

I literally even had a friend DDoS me before hand so they'd be able to see in router logs. What other excuse would be better than that? I genuinely don't know.
Back when I always got DDOSed on Xbox 360, Comcast always changed my IP for me. Either that, or I would hold the reset button on the back of the router for 30 seconds and that would do it. The reset button should be small and you have to push it in with a pen or something small.

You could also try changing your routers MAC address, so that it automatically assigns a new IP.

If all else fails, keep calling them until they do it. Leaving your router unplugged for a week is impractical, and I’ve heard that it takes just 2 minutes anyway not a whole week.

Exactly the same with me, I'd be grinding GB's and getting hit every few matches so they'd basically be on my speed-dial and they'd change my IP within 5min every time.

I was amazed when the guy said to leave it unplugged a week.

I tried changing the MAC address like I used to, but apparently because the router is a 2 in 1, that doesn't work.
Don't know much about routers but can't you buy a new one that's not related to Comcast?
Either that or switch your ISP, I don't think there is any other way.

yep
only way he could do it is to go buy his own router and you can manually change the DHCP server yourself (on certain router models)
If anyone can change your IP it's your provider. I have no idea what they are tying to pull off here lol
Did you try calling again to get on the phone with a different rep? maybe someone else can help you out.
