Hello, I don't see a discussion thread on this anime, so I thought I'd create one.
Quote:You are in a world where you can meet famous Japanese historical writers. With a party composed of other writers, you delve into tainted books to purify them, unlock secrets, and gain new allies.
You can find more about the anime, here: https://myanimelist.net/anime/40934/Bung...20Haguruma
It's highly recommended to keep your posts in spoilers, but there is no way to enforce that since this is a discussion thread and anything goes. Don't get upset if you read something and you aren't up-to-date with the current episodes.
As for me, I shall use spoiler codes for the first three episodes. After that, I will not use the spoiler code anymore.
When I first saw the page for this anime on MAL, I wasn't sure what I was getting myself into. I read the synopsis and I thought that this would end up being boring. It wasn't at all. I found myself enjoying this anime even more than expected. At the current time of writing this, this anime has a rating of 6.06 on MAL. So far I'd give this anime around a seven so that's pretty fair.
If you read the synopsis you will find that we will be meeting famous Japanese historical writers in this anime. Sadly, since I've never read any book from a Japanese author, I have no idea who these people in the anime are and if they are even real.
We learn later on that there are creatures named taints (funny word if you know what this is in slang) that want to take over the world by destroying literature. They enter books and take forms of the character and try to manipulate the story. When a taint is interested in destroying and altering a book, the author of said book is somehow teleported into the story and becomes a character. With that being said, this anime can also be classified as an isekai.
In the first episode, we meet Dazai and Akutagawa, Dazai's role-model. Both of them are authors and with them pairing up together, we learn about the taints, their objectives, and how to stop them.
It looks like the two will be teaming up, joining other author's books and helping them save their "world". I'm very curious about what other stories we will dive into and what other authors will be introduced to the story. With the introduction of new characters, I hope to see what we saw in the first episode. A mixture of comedy, a mixture of fantasy, and a slight mixture of drama.
The characters in this anime look great. They are very handsome and well-drawn. From what I can tell from the art style and the story, this anime is going to be mostly aimed for the female audience being that the way they are drawn just screams "hot boy". Taking a look at the character list, I can see some female characters too so I am excited to see what they have to offer and if it will prove that this is aimed towards women or not. There's nothing wrong with that though, I'd continue watching this regardless.
The story is alright. I think it's unique to take an isekai and not make it your typical main character gets trapped in a game or someone dies and is reincarnated. It changes up the isekai genre this season!
Episode two!
Overall a pretty boring and bad episode. The anime is currently at a 5.96 rating and that's pretty fair. I was looking forward to the next episode but this was just utterly boring. I found myself dazing off and falling asleep. Yes, it's 2 AM, but I usually don't sleep 'till around 6-7 AM.
I don't think we'll be getting any girls in this episode. It seems like an all-male cast. I thought we were going to get one eventually, but it turned out to be a guy with long hair in a braid. I don't judge, but alright. Additionally, I was going to say that this anime was aimed towards females considering that all the guys are handsome as hell. However, once you get to the end of the episode it turns into a bloodfest and I don't think too many girls would like that!
I'd say around the last 10 minutes of the episode it finally started to get interesting. It was very random, though. I wonder how the fight between Dazai and Ango is going to go. I think the girl that Akutagawa talked to at the community market has something to do with why Ango is killing everyone. He had this weird blue glow in his eye and maybe he's under a spell by her. We've seen a lot of weird stuff in this anime from the two episodes so it wouldn't surprise me if there is magic too.
Let's see what happens next week.
Episode three.
After reading the discussion thread for episode three, I realized that if you have seen Bungou Stray Dogs, then you might be familiar with some of the characters or have a special connection with them. Since I have not seen Bungou Stray Dogs I sadly don't have this connection that other people who have seen it and are watching this series have.
They can create a connection from certain things from Bungou Stray Dogs and this anime and sadly I don't understand it! Anyways, as I may have mentioned previously this series is a hit or a miss. The last two episodes have been a bit slow, but episode three brought the pace up a little.
I enjoyed episode three. It was a little bit darker than we were expecting, but overall I thought it was a good episode. I was right that Ango was entranced by one of the girls we previously saw in episode two, and it turns out she was the taint. I still can't help but laugh at the phrase.
Ango was able to snap out of the trance and realize who he is, the author of the book! I find it similar to Id:Invaded where Narihisago remembers that he is a true detective. It's sort of like that in this anime. When the authors realize that they wrote the book and they are a character in the story, their appearance changes to what they looked like in the real world.
For the most part, we already knew that Akutagawa was an important character and in the end we see Neko talking about him to someone through some sort of mysterious rock.
Looking at the character list, we will be getting more authors and hopefully, if they keep it up as they did with this episode it will continue to do well in my opinion. Otherwise, it's going to flop. Don't get me wrong, the artwork is so beautiful and the characters look great. The animation is very fluid, but with a lacking story that is boring and bland, you have to make up for that somehow.
The anime returns with its fourth episode after delaying productions due to the coronavirus. It wasn't a terrible episode, but it was a very random one with no explanation at all. Those who may have forgotten who the characters were (like me) won't be entirely confused when watching this episode, but altogether this episode was so random and as I mentioned before there was no explanation at all until the very ending, and that explanation was very vague.
We start by being in a dream of Akutagawa. For those who have forgotten who that is, he is one of the first authors we meet in the first episode. Akutagawa is a high-school student who knows nothing when it comes to books.
We meet a boy named Haruka at first glance looks like a girl until we realize it's a boy. It took me a while to realize it was a boy, but anyways Akutagawa seems interested in a book that he is reading. He decided to give it a try, and after doing so he tells Haruka how much he enjoys that book. Soon after that, they become friends, and Haruka gives Akutagawa some recommendations.
Later in the story, the taints (monsters that destroy books) make a slight appearance and destroy important books created by the authors we have met throughout the past four episodes. The ending scene where the teacher was explaining how a world without literature might destroy our world is not a bad point to bring up. I guess the theme of that dream was how much books, literature, and knowledge affect our everyday lives. Due to Haruka's suicide, it had a heavy effect on him and he ended up killing himself because all the pieces of work he enjoyed were destroyed? That's what my guess was.
Once again, a very random episode that needs more explanation.
Once again, the anime will be on a temporary delay. Episode 8 will hopefully air on July 3.

Reviewing this thread because of the episode that aired yesterday. We left off, obviously, from episode seven. However, if you are like me and don't care too much about this series then the previous episode was a blur to you. In addition to that, this anime has had so many delays because of the virus it's not helping with how bad the series is.
In this episode, Akutagawa reveals that he is being affected by a taint. This evil being within him goes after Dazai for whatever reason. As we know from the first episode, Dazai was the first author we've met I think that was affected by the taint until we met the other authors.
We are unsure of why this taint was targeting Dazai. Hell, I'm not even sure why they are targeting any of the authors. This anime so dumb and I just want it to finish.
We'll see Dazai's friends Oda and I think Ango goes into Dazai's book to save him. While that's happening, I'm wondering if we'll see what they are going to do with Akutagawa since the taint is still inside him.
At the end of the episode, we see Dazai saying "I can't wait for them to arrive" or something. I believe this is the first time someone affected by a taint has had their feelings this altered. We know that Dazai was on the verge of tears and his heart was in pain after Akutagawa's "evil side" said those mean words to him. Maybe those feelings transferred over to the book and it's changing him inside of the book?
Because this anime has been around since the spring 2020 season, I will continue not using spoilers for the remaining episodes.
Another boring episode in my opinion. Felt like it the dialogue was way too long, well it has been like that for the last few episodes, and nothing really special happened.
We thankfully got a little more action in this episode but even that was pretty lame. There are so many characters now in this anime that it's hard to keep up if you are watching this every week rather than a binge. Also, the story is very boring to follow too so that doesn't help.
In this episode, the three artists Kan and some other guys (see I can't even tell you their names) are trying to destroy the taint Akutagawa. However, Dazai and his friends come into the book and try and stop them. Then they fight over whether it's right or wrong to destroy the taint Akutagawa.
Anyways, let's hope it gets better in episode 12.
This is my final review for the anime "Bungou to Alchemist: Shinpan no Haguruma." I'll be reviewing this anime based on watching it weekly, rather than binge-watching. I wasn't too impressed with this anime. Going into it, I wasn't expecting anything because I am not too familiar with the Bungou series. If you are wondering if this is related to the original series, it's not. I believe the characters are the same, and maybe the art style is too, however, this story is not canon to Bungou Stray Dogs.
The first few episodes were interesting, to say the least. I wouldn't say I was hooked after watching the first episode, but it wasn't terrible. The anime revolves around various authors who have passed away. A mysterious entity is known as the "taints" that tamper with books. Within the books, they alter the story and somehow or another, the author of the books re-incarnate into the main character of the book that they wrote. We first start with Dazai and are soon introduced to Akutagawa sensei who rescues him. This gives us the idea and general basis of what the story will be about.
Soon after saving him, Akutagawa and Dazai meet a magical cat who is in charge of a library for artists in the afterlife. At the moment, only Dazai and Akutagawa are present in this library. The magical cat has special powers that let him talk to the one who created the library, which is known as the Alchemist. Not much is known about him, and honestly, you won't learn anything about him (I say him but he's probably not even a real being) other than the fact that he controls the library and the laws within it.
Soon enough, in the next few episodes, we find Akutagawa and Dazai diving into books meeting new authors. At first, this was okay. I could dig it It eventually got to the point where there were too many authors appearing in the anime, and I couldn't tell you a single name other than Dazai and Akutagawa. There just were too many characters, and I dislike anime like this. Even if I were to binge this, I don't think I'd remember everyone.
As more of the authors appeared, the story started to change. There were a few filler episodes, maybe one or two, where all of the authors got together and spent the day farming and such. But really, the story out of this was fairly boring. There were some action and fighting, but it wasn't anything special. There were no unique abilities, and even though you could tell there was some power difference, there was not. Everyone was the same, no one was stronger than anyone else even though they tried to portray that.
Around episode 8 the series took a small break because of the corona pandemic. I don't think the anime was affected too much. The pacing of the anime was very slow. I felt like falling asleep at times. As mentioned before, there were a lot of characters in this anime, and I felt this anime was aimed towards a female audience. There is nothing wrong with that of course.
Overall, I'm going to give this anime a 4/10 which on MAL is a "Bad" rating. I just didn't find this anime too entertaining. It's not something I was looking forward to watching that week, and I'm glad it ended. I would not recommend this anime if you are just looking to watch something and waste time. If you are into Japanese literature you may find interest in this. There are some themes when watching this, and how literature will open your mind to new things. It definitely gave me some life lessons to think about, but if literature, in general, isn't your forte, you won't like this at all.
