Hi there, I plan on moving to New York City - Brooklyn to be particular.
What are some items or necessities one should have? I plan on getting a room with roommates.
An example of an item would be a brita for water filteration.

Since I did move to NY as well when I turned 18 I suppose I should give my advice.
Things to bring, a weapon is first. Likely something like a knife (legal up to 3" blade), mace or some other means of personal protection.
Bring as little as possible otherwise. Most NY apartments are small. Bring only what you really need imho.
You don't need a water filter. NY has some of the best water in any city of the world. Just gotta worry about the building pipes.
And a tip: Don't be overly friendly. Not sure where you are moving from but avoid eye contact with everyone. Don't walk around with a smile on your face either. You'll notice that no one smiles in NY while walking the streets alone, you look like a tourists or an easy mark that way.
My guess is you'll be riding the subway a lot. Learn the map as quickly as you can and avoid looking at it repeatedly while on the train. Again, you will look like a tourists and an easy mark.
Walk briskly. You'll notice almost no one walks slowly in NYC. People got things to do and places to go.
Best of luck. We'll see how long you'll last. If you get past the 2 year mark then congrats will be in order. Hope to see your progress updated in this thread. I made it 16 years before giving NY the middle-finger and running away. I will never return.

Colors and attitude, in non tourist areas a young male wearing the wrong colors can lead to unnecessary attention. Pay close attention to your choice of clothing. Hats also have different meanings in Brooklyn.
I agree with Omni about being overly nice but pay attention to anyone being overly nice to you as well.
If you’re walking alone at night or in a generally sketchy area, keep your electronics in your pocket.
Pickpocketing isn’t a big issue just walking around, but on crowded trains and busses it can become a serious problem.
Dumb tip here about metro cards, if you plan to travel around a lot, just get the pay monthly metro card.

Real pickpockets go to Times Square. Otherwise you basically get mugged and told to hand your shit over or else. This happens because you come off as weak target.

Yeah, that's potentially the guy is who about to mug you.

Oh, absolutely worth it.
It will take time to develop your radar for trouble but you will eventually get a spidey-sense.

My advice, watch How I Met Your Mother.
Then do everything exactly the opposite of that show.
:)
(season 4 episode 3)
All jokes aside don't. There's nothing good there, maybe once it was worth it - but now, no. Just no.
The big apple is just that, the issue is the people didn't look after it - It's now not even good for an apple pie.
Everything is a competition in NY. This drives a sense of hate towards anyone who could take something before they do.

Good boots, coat, hat, and gloves.
Get a Metrocard if you're going to be taking the subway a lot. Also a really good pair of socks (i suggest cotton) you're going to be walking a lot. Dress for comfort.
A bike seems like a good idea, but you're not gonna be riding a bike when it's cold or raining. Plus without a bike you don't have to worry about finding a safe place for it. Just walk and dress correctly, take the sub.
Glad this thread became a thing. I'll be heading over to NY in December. Looking forward to the trip. I'll potentially be spending a few weeks there, but that's it. Good luck moving there man!
To speak on the water filter thing, I once heard that the reason NY has good pizza, is because of the water they use to make the dough or something along those lines. IDK if that was a troll or not, but I guess we'll see.
