Hi guys, I recently bought 36 3090 cards and I am thinking of replacing the thermal pads with better ones to reduce the heat on my VRAM, however, if I change the thermal pads I will lose the warranty, do you guys think it's worth doing it and lose the warranty?
Is it worth changing thermal pads on 3090 cards and lose warranty? |

While not very likely the situation, I wouldn't risk it on a 3090 that's going to be running 24/7 and likely need every waking moment on and running for ROI. weigh your risk to reward I guess. If changing the thermal pads can boost your ROI significantly then do it. If it's like 1% gains then meh. Is there something I should think about if I change the thermal pads? Once I change it and it's running 24/7 what should I think of? I mean I don't mind if something happens to the card after 1-2 year, I want to be able to mine at least something.

Why are you trying to change the thermal pads? Are you trying to increase the hash rate? I mean if it's worth it in terms of ROI do it.
IMHO whatever you do don't destroy your warranty. Cards go bad. Trust me you'll want that warranty. Isn't there other cooling solutions that won't break warranty?
Yes its common to replace the thermal pads on 3090s if you use them for mining, they can get very hot, some people also do that with 3080s.
BUT if you have never done maintenance to other electronics like for example a PS4 or something, then I dont recommend you to take apart a GPU, a GPU is not something you want to start with, I have taken apart many PS4s and Xbox and I thought it would be easy for me to replace thermal pads on a GPU, but it wasnt that easy, watch a youtube video on how to replace thermal pads with the exact brand and model of the ones you have and if you feel confident go ahead and do it, some models are harder to work with than others.

It's very common for RTX 30 series to replace thermal pads as the temperatures for mining are crazy. The VRAM can go up to 110 degrees celsius as explained in documentation but you really don't want to run that temperature for months straight, it's really bad for the cards.
I myself have a RTX 3080 that was using 110 degrees if I wanted to get around 100 MH/s. I replaced my thermal pads and it stays at a cool 85 degrees when it's ran 24/7. So yes, I would say it's better to avoid warranty. There's no point keeping it, if you manage to break it now, good luck getting a replacement since they are still pretty scarse.

Too late, I already destroyed the warranty on 15 of the cards and changed the thermal pads, unfortunately, I still have the issue with high temperature, I am gonna buy some heatsink made of copper and try to add it on the backplate and see if the heat gets reduced, the thing here is that it is very complicated whether it is wort to lose the warranty or not. If you choose to not lose the warranty you will have to run the cards on a high temperature that means the card gets a lot of damage in the long end so lets say if the warranty is for 2 years and I run these cards for 2 years on high temp they might get destroyed after 2 years, while if I destroy the warranty and replace the thermal pads the card might live up to 5 years, however it is very scary to think that just one card can get lost directly that means 2700 EUR on trash can (Nov 3, 2021 03:56 AM)Lyrica Wrote: May I ask how expensive it was? That was a neat steal of 3090's :D It cost me a lot of money to buy 36 3090 however I got an offer from the company I bought them from so I got a little bit discount. Can you help me to reduce the heat on my vram? I replaced all thermal pads but only reduced the heat for 5-6celsius which is not good. Is it not that effective because the fans are not on?
I did some looking around and replacing thermal pads should help more than 5-6c... Looking online people get results from 15-25c reduction

What I do know is that the thickness of the thermal pads is very important. Make sure you don't screw something up. This may be the reason why the temperature is still not satisfactory.
