August 1914, what if the British government had decided not to enter WW1? The Germans would likely have invaded France and won a quick victory. The first world war might well not have been a 'world war' at all, then no russian revolution, no soviet union, no nazis, etc etc.

But you can keep doing this with anything.

What if the confederacy has wheeled south against Washington DC rather than fought at Gettysburg, what if Genghis Khan had died in infancy, what if the neanderthals had killed off homo-sapiens, and on and on and on.

Everything that has happened is so unlikely, that you could say anything and everything is the biggest what if.
