A man was fatally shot by his rescuer after falling in a South Carolina lake.

South Carolina prosecutors decided not to file charges in a case where a man who fell off a recreational watercraft was fatally shot by his rescuer, according to the Oconee County Sheriff's Office.

Prosecutors ruled the shooting self-defense, the sheriff's office said in a statement.

The incident occurred Tuesday afternoon, when a man and woman -- neither wearing life jackets -- fell off a Jet Ski into Lake Keowee, the sheriff's office said in an earlier news release, citing the information and evidence gathered in the investigation.

A couple on a nearby pontoon boat saw the man and woman "in distress in the water" and brought them on board, the sheriff's office said, as the Jet Ski continued doing circles in the lake.

"The man, who had been rescued, became agitated and began assaulting the couple on the pontoon," the statement said. "Investigators have been told that the man may have wanted to get back to the Jet Ski."

The rescued woman tried to de-escalate the situation by pushing the agitated man back into the water, the statement said. The couple then helped him back in the boat a second time.

Another confrontation occurred, the sheriff's office said, and the man on the pontoon boat "shot the man fearing for his and his wife's life while being assaulted."

The man died on the pontoon boat, per the sheriff's office.

I want to say it was deserved, but then again, it's always tragic for a young life to end like this.

This could've had a much different ending if both parties were calmer, but there is no restart button in life. It must have been bad when old guy decided to shot him because he feared for his life
Drunk idiots on the lake. Happens all the time.
The dude was a lock-ness monster so they put him down.

Especially a guy whose life he had just tried to saved twice. I guess the guy was drunk or on drugs and was blaming the people who rescued him from keeping him from his jet ski.
His mind was just stupidly on his material possession and wanting it back. I get he probably loved the item, but yeah sounds like he was a drunken idiot.

I hope that old guy wasn't just too trigger happy, and that it's a clear case of actual self defense though. And people don't realise that "self defense" is not easily proven and doesn't just mean shooting anyone that was acting kinda threatening towards you. There are certain criteria that must be met, depending on your jurisdiction, and if you shoot someone in the back you're very liable to do time for manslaughter or murder, however threatening the person may have been acting before they turned their back. You usually have to be in IMMEDIATE danger and fear for your life.

You're very right, having worked in the private security industry for around 10 years, we had to take courses every year to keep us updated on law and use of force. It's incredibly stressful sometimes when you're in a situation and you have to consider what is worthy of deadly force. I worked with several guys who would pull their guns simply to talk to someone. Personally I've only had to pull my firearm twice in that entire time, one when a man tried to run me over (he was using deadly force against me), and the second when another man was stomping on the head of an elderly person (which is also deadly force).

And deadly force isn't always just guns, it applies to things like batons too, so they teach a general rule of hitting the outline of someone from the shoulders down, because a strike to the neck or head could cause death, making it a use of deadly force, in a situation that may not require it.

We also ran sim drills with guns that felt realistic enough in weight and recoil, simulations on everything from homeless people sleeping at a bus stop, to school shootings, and mall bombers.

it's very important to really drill into people the levels of use of force.
