My Terrifying Morning-Sleep Paralysis

My wife and son left at 6am, and soon after I began to hear them in the living room. I could only open my eye, otherwise I was completely unable to move. Primal fear began to seep into my mind, something was wrong. I closed my eyes and began to hear my wife very close. "Doooon't waaake uuuup," she said in a mocking voice, that wasn't quite right. I opened my eye again, only enough to see through my eyelashes, like a child pretending to be asleep. I could only see her from the shoulders down, she swayed side to side. "Doooon't waaake uuuup," she said again, over and over. It was at this point that I felt like I'd been thrown into ice water, my breath stolen from my lungs. I struggled to catch it, and felt like I was going to pass out. I closed my eye and began to pray.

When I opened by eyes I was alone, I couldn't hear anyone else in the house. I looked at my phone and saw that it was 7:15am. The whole ordeal had taken over an hour. My breathing doesn't feel quite right still, and my chest feels like I had someone standing on it. I've had sleep paralysis several times, and it usually happens for several days in a row. I'm hoping this is an exception and I don't have it again tonight, or tomorrow morning. These all started after developed PTSD and usually when I am sleeping alone, though not exclusively. I don't sleep as well when I am alone.

Have you ever suffered from sleep paralysis? How long? if you've had it several times, which was the worst?
I never Experienced it myself but a close friend of mine experiences it every now and then. Once we were sleeping in the same room, and all of a Sudden he started screaming and all that stuff.

When I woke him Up, he said someone was laying over his chest and choking his neck.

Sleep paralysis is a mystery.

I understand the proposed cause for it, but it's strange that everyone experiences the same thing, without much difference. Like dragons existing in every culture, everyone sees something on their chest or at minimum pressure on it.
Have you been particularly stressed lately?

Sure, but not so much over the weekend. I had a great time playing with my son all weekend, I haven't really thought about anything else.

A friend of mine had sleep paralysis [literally] every morning during college.

His biggest fear before college was losing control of his body.

I hope your problem resolves itself!
I've heard of a few cases through friends, but never personally experienced it. Just based on what you described it sounds awful.. hope it isn't a continuous occurrence.
Damn, I know that feeling. I had sleep paralyses many times as a child. A trick I learned is to try to move your fingers, you'll slowly reign control over your muscles and close your eyes.

I always remember suffocating when it happens, so I had to force myself to wake up before it was too late... And when you wake up the big gasp for air. Also, let's not forget the heavy hallucinations, like hearing someone coming up the stars while no one is at home, or a creature in the corner staring at you.

After a couple of years, I noticed that I would get a sleep paralyses/lucid dreaming when I sleep on my back. So, I sleep on my side to prevent it.

My late Shih-Tzu suffered from narcolepsy I believe. Though completely different, sleeping disorders are nothing to be taken lightly. I've never experienced lucid dreaming or sleep paralysis that I know of.
Sounds terrifying man. I'd recommend trying to sleep on your belly or side tonight, as it's more likely to get these episodes when sleeping on your back.

Also, did you drink / smoke / drink coffee before bedtime?

I've had just one sleep paralysis throughout my entire life, but it was so long ago that I can't tell for sure if it was one of those episodes. What I remember is that I skipped school and stayed in bed watching TV, I must have fell asleep for a short time and when I 'woke up' I somehow couldn't get my eyes off this drawer in the aisle across my room, it's not just that: I felt an unreasonable sense of fear, like I was actually frightened to death for no fucking reason and I couldn't do anything but stare at it.. I'm probably missing some details that I've forgotten about, because I can't really explain the fear I felt - imagine fearing for your life but the cause is literally an inanimate and harmless object. Because of how unreasonable and traumatic that was to me, I've always believed it was a sleep paralysis.

Exactly how it felt man, primal fear.

Nah, I didn't do anything before bed, but I was also sleeping on my stomach.

I always have a stressful day after one of these, but I consider myself lucky because it doesn't happen as often as it does for some.

Tbh, this is the first time I've seen someone while having these. The others were sound related, I had a dream I was in a car wreck and my wife kept saying, "please don't die" over and over and it got louder and more distorted, and I couldn't move.

Another time I heard someone running at me, and only after struggling did I get a leg up to stop them, only to find out there was nobody.

I think the fact I saw a person in my wife's dress swaying side to side freaks me out the most. Tbh, I pull out my glock and kept it next to me under the blankets until I had to get out of bed for work.

Some people have it all the time. I only get it for a couple days every few months. I hope this was a one off though.
Hello, Handsome, I severely suffered from sleep paralysis as a young teen to young adult. Most people describe it vaguely and rarely, mines were constant. Not every night but maybe every two nights. Although I never experienced what most say with figures or voices. Mines were more like lucid dreams I couldn’t wake up from. My eyes would be open and I knew I was awake but I would still be dreaming.

I have experienced it one single time as an adult. My wife was sleeping directly next to me, I woke up and could see her looking at social media on her phone. I was unable to move or talk(obviously) but due to this constantly happening to me as a child and lots of reading I had a tricks up my sleeve.

Sleep paralysis is due to major muscles in your body being shut down for deep sleep. If you've ever slept with someone and they twitch and jerk as they fall to sleep it’s the same thing. The body removes any remaining energy from these muscles, when you have sleep paralysis it’s like you’ve woken up before your brain knows your awake.

The reason I state this is because I learned that you can deflate your lungs and use your voice box to make kind of a sound? Like “help” but it doesn’t sound like help at all. If someone moves you while you’re in sleep paralysis, your brain will jolt your muscles awake.

I’ve spoken on this before on here and always felt lucky I never experienced the ghosts/demons that many others have. Even if it was more of a constant issue.

Sounds heavy man haha

It really leaves me speechless how our mind can manifest this, it feels so surreal when it happens.
