How did you go from not being able to afford a crew to being able to afford a multi-thousand dollar group?

I have no clue what you're talking about dude. I've owned multiple crews, and this is my second group. As Beau so elegentaly explained, frugality isn't the same as not having the cash.

Being frugal is not the same as being poor.

I honestly think my frugality stems from being raised by my grandparents who themselves lived thru the depression and would do weird stuff like steal ketchup packets from restaurants so they wouldn't have to buy their own. Very frugal people they were.
