The first one to me was unbeatable, and I remembered them as a bunch of thugs eating in the back yard. It was treated as a low budget hence they had to rent and borrow certain cars. The atmosphere literally drifted off after Tokyo Drift. The initial $38M budget over tripled in revenue. It wouldn't have been successful like this without the first which Universal Pictures was surprisingly proud of. Certainly, it was a saga that wasn't lame as Star Wars.
I thought Justin Lin was genius in developing the story of the Fast saga, until realizing he didn't direct the 1st or 2nd. When The Rock was announced to get in Fast Five, there were mixed reactions, and I thought how would The Rock be appealing in a riced out Honda Civic--they didn't do that to him. One thing Justin did correctly was put Rock in a bounty hunter role. I thought Tokyo Drift was the most fun to watch, even though my uncle thought it was horrible or unrealistic to others, contrary to other beliefs, Justin has credit where it's due. At least Justin didn't direct the sorriest Fast & Furious movie: 2 Fast 2 Furious. I don't remember if I was sleeping watching that.
Upcoming Fast X will have a new director. According to news, perhaps why Justin left/retired from the Fast franchise was difficulty complying with Vin's leadership. Most importantly, Vin knows the audience. It has been rumored Vin is now taking the lead through the new director. As stated from Tyrese himself, he mentioned the new director is taking F&F back to its roots.
Recently, Sung Kang (Han) posted an Instagram with the Veilside body RX-7. From what I read, the RX-7 should be appearing in Fast X (if I'm not mistaken). The rotary powered RX-7 is an icon of the JDM world. It means rotary experiment 7. Resurrection at its finest.
Directors:
The Fast and the Furious - Rob Cohen
2 Fast 2 Furious - John Singleton
Tokyo Drift - Justin Lin
Fast and Furious - Justin Lin

Furious 6 - Justin Lin
Furious 7 - James Wan
The Fate of the Furious - F. Gary Gary
Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw - David Leitch
F9 - Justin Lin
Fast X - Louis Leterrier
