Other cryptos have already been doing this. Anyone who trys to tell you lightning network is Bitcoin has a seriously flawed understanding on how block chains work.
You can name countless projects that work "off the main chain" on other chains such as Ethereum which is already much cheaper and faster than Bitcoin.
Ethereum for example processes more transactions per second, or more data per second than Bitcoin does. Lightning networks help reduce the strain on Bitcoin itself and make it appear to be the faster cheaper chain for example when you send basic small data transactions.
If Ethereum didn't have smart contracts, NFTs, "other uses" then the transactions just to send Ether would cost much less.
If people tried to do the same thing on Bitcoin (which actually you can do more than you think) then just sending a Bitcoin would cost more for example.
Also Ethereum works in seconds, Bitcoin takes an average of 10 minutes. Sometimes shorter, sometimes longer.
Ethereum and all the other blockchains have their own versions of "the lightning network" for scaling even further where everything settles on the chain later.
Side chains, layer 2 chains, etc. Call it what you will.
Bitcoin is Bitcoin. (Layer 1)
Lightning network is lightning network. (Layer 2)
Think about the strain and cost of sending Bitcoins would be if we didn't have alt coins like Ethereum processing other types of data.
So that is why you often hear people say, Bitcoin doesn't scale well. Then come the layer 2s etc.
They are right it just doesn't scale well, as soon as everyone would start to use it then the system becomes even more expensive than Ethereum.
So now we're just going to start using layer2 solutions more and more, even on POS chains.
If none of these alt coins and layer2 solutions existed, Bitcoin would still process the same amount of transactions but at a much higher cost.
We need alt coins but also love Bitcoin.
