How do you feel about job applications?

Hello HF ✌

I applied for many roles in the last weeks and for some of them I got that polite denial email back, which is totally fine, for others I haven't ever heard back, which, again, let's say is "fine-ish". Roles I usually apply for in the past 1-2 months: Copywriter / Digital Marketing / Content Strategist / Sales Development Representative

One of them, I recently interviewed, and the call seemed awesome from both parties, I really enjoyed talking to this young German guy, and he seemed to like talking to me too for about 45-50 minutes.

He said he'd reach back with some updates regardless of whether I'm selected by the end of the week. To explain: Call happened Tuesday, and it's Sunday I haven't heard anything back.

I connected with him on LinkedIn the same day I had the interview, and he responded.

Meanwhile, I asked some extra questions over e-mail that I forgot to chat about in the Zoom call because we were running out of time, and he had to jump on other calls.

He replied to my first email and then he never responded to my second during this 4-5 day period, and I never heard back any updates... then I went ahead and messaged him on LinkedIn with a short question like "You got any updates for me? Have a great weekend". He instantly SEEN it but no reply.

Now, I know you might be saying, "Bro this guy is impatient as fk", but... I am waiting on other interviews and I'm looking to chat with many other companies, I deserve to have some updates to pick my direction.

Also, I applied to a gaming company and received a connect request from the CEO of one company, waited for 3-4 days to see if he messages me or anything, so he didn't and I asked him "Hey, I appreciate the connect request and I'm happy to chat if you got any questions about my application". That never had a REPLY either.

TL;DR - I applied to many jobs, and I kinda got ghosted by a company that I interviewed with while having a super good feeling about how it went, then connected with another CEO of a company at his request, and then he never messaged me but SEEN my opener message on LinkedIn.

So, the big question: How do you feel about job applications, and have you been through similar experiences?

Unfortunately that's the name of the game right now.

Certain fields are becoming hyper competitive with the likes of 'internet work' on the raise.

This is just a matter of the numbers game. Eventually you'll land yourself a job.

Ensure your CV is concise and the best to your ability. Best of luck!

Connects mean less than nothing on Linked In. Considering every CEO and Recruiter just run scripts to mass connect with everyone now.

I know it’s a numbers game that’s why I apply on a daily basis.

Twitter DM is awesome

Upwork is cool for short gigs, sometimes hit gold ($5,000 - $7,500 contracts).

I use Looms as well but so far none has been watched. To add a bit more info:
I have vast experiences and my CV isn’t boring or anything like that. I even add a Loom to my app sometimes and I see they haven’t been watched yet, so I guess recruiting over all is at a level of speed that they barely read anything anymore from your app.

Extra info: been freelancing for a lot of time and stuff that I was doing went very dry, hence why I’m exploring jobs now besides my agency and everything else I run.

Exactly, but the fact that he connected after like a week or two from when I applied for his company, kinda gave me some “hopes”.

Sadly its really common these days for companies to either just never respond, or even if you get an interview to then go silent right after. When I first finished school, I sent out nearly 400 applications over six months and I can count on one hand the number of companies that actually sent out any sort of thanks for your time/application message after an interview. I did eventually land a dream job though, so just keep trucking!

Since it's Monday I got asked to come to an interview but was asked what salary range I'm expecting over email. I replied with too much and they've immediately said their bye-byes.

I told them I'm waiting to hear their salary ranges and that I only said it based on some Google research of said position salaries on Glassdoor / Indeed.

Hopefully they get back but I can't believe I disqualified myself like that. LOL

Oof that's always a rough situation. There are some good tricks though to be prepared when it does come up. Make sure when you do your research that you don't just take the industry wide average, but also look into what the local average is for that location. For my role for example, I make good money but about half of what I could one state over here in the US doing the same work. It can really vary greatly based on your location. Also, make sure to express when you give them a range, that you are open to discussion on the matter. Make sure to also put emphasis on the fact of the job, something like, "My first and foremost priority is to find a role that suits my skills and interests, but I'd also like to make sure that we can find common ground in matching it with a mutually beneficial wage." And of course, don't forget to ask for more information, certain perks can be absolute game changers against the salary itself. My fiance makes a little bit less than she really should for example, but between healthcare benefits and job perks, it all adds up pretty quickly to be a good counterbalance. For example, if a workplace provides you with a paid lunch, and then also provides free meal options for employees, that adds up to thousands in annual savings.

Job applications are the worst. A lot of them are just contact grabbing with no actual job on the table. For saturated fields, once you get a call, you're up against about 30-40 other people. Once you get an interview, you're up against 3-10 other people. The odds are super against you.

My one piece of advice is to avoid recruiters, and to contact the company as directly as possible. Cut out the middle man.

I’ve never really experienced having to submit applications for a job. Most of the jobs I’ve had I either knew the people personally or was referred by an associate. Though reading other people’s horror stories about the application process it seems absurd the hoops companies attempt to force people to jump through.
they can be draining sometimes

That's if you're in the U.S.A. Every single week there's more immigrants coming to this country's getting labor jobs and trying to compete.
If there's only 200 jobs in your area for that perticular job. There's at least 20,000 to 40,000 people applying for that same job.

Right now isn't a good time to get a job. Wait till 2024. Right now every company are doing layoffs. There's a hiring freeze.
You can apply for job postings but I feel they most post the jobs and are looking for people that are desperate for the job to
do the job at the cheapest price possible. I seen there's more jobs right now that are party time then full time.
It's due to the economy conditions right now. It should turn around in 2024.

I applied to over 1,000 jobs. I had to go thru hoops. I had to first take an online exam. Then get a basic interview via zoom.
Then take a in person exam was is a drive. Then after supposed to get my final interview but they never responded.
I had to email them asking about it and they told me that they went ahead with other candidates.

There's people running around with masters degrees and PHD's degrees and just getting their entry job positions.
and these are from like ivory league colleges. It's too dam competitive.

Keep trying but don't expect on getting a job in 2024 or at least apply to labor jobs cuz that's the only thing you might get.

A bit of a harsh truth but much appreciated.

I landed two smaller jobs that will only pay me for the taks I'll have to do and it's like more about directly working with the CEOs of 2 small companies.

I submitted a salary expectation by replying to an email and got myself disqualified lol. You're right, they're trying to pay less and less nowadays.

Just keep looking and attending interviews, if you get an opportunity then you can just tell any following interest that you have already found employment. There is no need to wait to hear from these guys to continue the search.

I wish you courage, it's not easy especially in fields like yours

I'm doing that, but there's certain companies that I'd really love to work with from those I applied to, but they're taking a while to get back.

But I totally get your point and I'm still going at it :)

Long, puts me off applying all the time
