I tried using bettercap to sniff the network with no luck, i'm using a cheap d-link dwa-121 for my wifi adapter, do i need to install the drivers for it on kali?

Regardless of what devices you have, you can't sniff anything if you don't have the proper drivers installed. Yes, you need the right drivers.

No luck meaning no packets? Bettercap relies on ARP spoofing meaning monitor mode isn't needed. I'm not seeing how this is even a wireless question. Which modules are running?
