I'm going to try and leave this without spoilers and stick to just what can be seen in the multiple trailers but something may come out.
So I watched Civil War earlier today. I'm not a big cinema goer, the big screen is too much for me, but I decided to go after reading a bunch of views from the actors.
I really enjoyed the premise. I think a 2nd in the Civil War in the USA is a believable concept and I agree with the need for more discussion that the movie was reported to promote. The movie ends up being a movie showcasing the horrors of war and showcasing it in an American background; a location that has been safe from war for 100+ years. Many parts of the movie point to a dictatorship (3 term president, abolishment of the FBI, no journalists within DC, etc). It has several calls to modern groups and events.
Unfortunately, I think the movie is too short to express all of its views. The movie does a bad job of explaining what all is going on. I think this may be by design in order to feel more chaotic but I would have enjoyed more discussion/information on what lead to this state and what each faction is fighting for. You basically follow a team of journalists and see only what they see in the movie. The journalists, IMO, seem more into the adrenaline of being a war journalist and much less into bringing it to other people. I won't go into any spoilers but there's a moment where one of them mention "journalism isn't asking questions, it's letting stuff play out" but at the same time they're traveling the country to ask people questions(??).
I did enjoy the multiple juxtapose of historical American images against modern military equipment. I think the movie did a good work with the music and sounds, except I think it overused silence as an emphasis.
Overall, I would give it like a 7.6/10. I thought it was a good movie and worth a watch. I think it brings some interesting ideas on what a Civil War in the modern day may look like. Unfortunately, I don't think it does the job of bringing discourse to the forefront and I think it falls short of being the epic I was led to believe. I'd watch it again but I'm not paying for it.
Have you seen it? Any thoughts?
