After looking into it and getting some recommendations on here about hosting a Kali VM on AWS, i finally got around to doing it, and ive just finished.
As you probably know already, the Kali version it installs is the very basic edition. I gave the instance the maximum it would allow me - 20GB storage so i thought that should be more than enough to install the kali-full-upgrade metapackage to install what i usually have running on my kali installation laptops - i was wrong and i maxed the storage after about 80% completed.
Ive never had to do it before, but im going to need to rollback to the default kali and try the top-10 package and grow from there.
My issue is, i dont know if thats possible -i have searched it up and i get no results for what i need to do.
Does anyone know how? Would it be easier to deactivate my current AWS instance and create a new one, or is there another way to accomplish this without having to delete the whole VM?

the sad news bud, is likely, you're going to have to trash the VM and rebuild. only takes a minute or 2 to do (unless you already spend ages customising it)

Yeah i figured id have to do that.
Fortunately i didnt customise is, i was testing how the process works, took about an hour to set it up, install kali and a GUI but that was only because i was reading all the option, but will take about 5 mins now i know how it works.

ah, i think the issue there is likely the gui. that will take up a fair chunk also. honestly, a gui usually isnt needed for kali. CLI all the way. best to learn it now. if you NEED a gui, maybe best to get a local VM running even low specs for practice? or, look into x11 port forwarding. you dont need a gui screen when you cann pull the x11 through an SSH tunnel :D

I have a desktop that runs a kali VM with 12gb ram dedicated to it, but i dont often get a chance to jump on it, so i installed in on a few laptop so i can carry one with me at all times in case i need to look something up or help someone with a case but the bootloader keeps breaking giving me the EFI shell. I wanted to get one on AWS so i have one ready wherever i go.
Youre right about the GUI, ill probably restart it and lose the GUI.

that's fair mate. I usually have a kali VM kncking around somewhere I can jump on but as i say, i just use it for the CLI. I dont think theres anything in kali that I need the GUI for. except if im doing burpsuite pro and a web app pentest for a client.
worth investing in a VPS instead? can get them fairly cheap these days,. and specs will be enough and can have a proper gui

I see your point.
I was thinking about a VPS before I went AWS, but the problem I have is I’d want it to be as fast as possible and have the top specs lol. Simply because it would be for my team to use as well instead of having to spend half the day comparing notes 😂
What specs you recommend if it was just for me?

I'm about to do an Annoying reply I'm sure but, it depends what you're expecting to do in it haha. As that would depending if you need more disk space or ram or CPU

It’s for pentesting on the odd occasion, but primary it will be used for intelligence gathering
