Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays?

This time of year, people celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, New Year’s, and more. Some stick to “Merry Christmas,” while others say “Happy Holidays” to include everyone.

What do you prefer? Does it depend on who you’re talking to, or do you always use one? Let’s hear your thoughts!

Both work out fairly well.
But one is more inclusive these days

Yup, I prefer to be inclusive because for someone who doesn’t celebrate, I don’t want to make them uncomfortable

Except the rats, they can be uncomfortable.

“Merry Christmas you filthy animals”

Like how does someone respond when being told merry Christmas if they don’t celebrate? Do they say merry Christmas back or happy holidays?

It depends on who I am talking to.
If I know they celebrate Christmas, I say "Merry Christmas", but if I am unsure, "Happy Holidays" feels like the safest option.

That’s probably the best way to go about it!

Happy holidays is generally what I’ll say. Unless I know what you celebrate in which case I would say the holiday.
I always say "Merry Christmas."
