This is a video of the helicopter crashing into the plane:

There is speculation online that the heli pilot may have been watching the craft taking off, rather than the one landing (AA).
From what we know:
- ATC followed all protocols and laws
- ATC contacted helicopter pilot
- Pilot confirmed to ATC they have visual separation
- This then triggers normal protocol
- ATC apparently made 3 calls to the pilot before the crash
All evidence points to:
- ATC did what they should
- Pilot fucked up royally
Unfortunately we have one guy going after ATC instead of the pilot, even though no official investigation has been completed.
He's asking the "big questions" !

Unfortunately this says more about his inability to process information than it says about any sort of ATC failure.

The reason Trump's comment is misinformed & disorganized & impulsive in nature is simple:
- Pilots are trained to fly
- ATC employees are not pilots
- ATC employees cannot tell a pilot exact second-to-second steps to fly
- Unless you mean all ATC employees should be pilots
- But then we are in a loop: we can't trust pilots, so we hire... more pilots?
Of course, pilot-trained ATC would be a huge benefit. Is it realistic or going to happen? No.
ATC employees are already incredibly well trained & responsive.
Visual separation protocol is defined, and was respected in this case.
Unfortunately this is a case of a highly maneuverable helicopter fucking up 100%, at the worst time. Not a case of ATC failure.
From what people have said about the ATC radio transmissions, they did nothing wrong and this is 100% on the helicopter pilot.

Quote:Shortly before the crash, additional audio reveals the helicopter pilot responding, “PAT 2-5 has aircraft in sight, request visual separation.” Less than 13 seconds later, audible gasps, including a loud "oooh", are heard in the background from the control tower at the moment of impact.
