Help Finding Someones Info thats blackmailing my friend.

I do not know a ton about all of this and I am not completely sure that a "hack" is exactly what I need here.

Someone is blackmailing one of my friends, threatening to release private pictures and information if my friend does not send them many more private pictures and videos.

I need some advice for sure though.

So far I have the blackmailers fake phone number, which is based off of the texting app "TextNow".
I also got my friend to send him a grabify link that I set up and have managed to find out his IP Address, ISP, and General Location.

Based on the current information all together, this is someone that knows my friend in real life and had my friends main phone number either prior to doing this or got it from someone close to my friend. The blackmailer lives in the general area around my friend and knows a decent bit of information about my friends life but has gotten a few minor details incorrect.

It should be fairly easy to identify who this is with just a bit more information such as the blackmailers actual email, actual phone number, or of course their actual name.

I cannot personally think of any more ways to get information from the blackmailer unless they accidentally say it or I social engineer it out of them. I do not have a great prompt for social engineering other than approaching the TextNow number and pretending that I want to work with the person and that I can help him and give him more information until he accidentally tells me something identifying.

If someone can offer me better ideas or techniques that would be really greatly appreciated.

Also can we take his IP address that I got from grabify, give it to the police/FBI, and identify and prosecute him?
Yeah the police could get a warrant for his ISP to hand over details on who they are. Then proceed from there. It's best that your friend quits replying and ignores the scammer.

Don't fall for a scam, use a middleman!

Try running the IP address you got through some leaked databases. Many allow you to search by ip address and will likely pair with a name, only issue is IP addresses sometimes have 3 results or 300. Because they are shared but it’s possible you could get a hit that way. Or maybe if you get like 10 results and look into who they are you could use the process of elimination to narrow down potential suspects I.E someone’s grandma probably isn’t the culprit. But odds are it wont be indisputable evidence but you might catch your man. Plenty of databases exist online.

If it ran back to a some specific full names combinations or even last names (if he lives with his parents still) then we could probably fairly easily pinpoint who it is. I have tested a couple of websites for this IP Address method you mentioned but I am not really sure I am picking solid sites. No results with the ones I used. Would you be able to post or message me the name of some websites? Now my understanding too is that he can change his IP just by resetting the router correct? So this could simply be an IP used by him today and today only?

Leaving a router off overnight will be enough for the IP address lease to expire. All residential IP addresses are dynamic and subject to change at any time.

I would normally say no. An IP logger would not be admissible as evidence, and the law would not care an iota about you tricking someone into revealing an IP address.

However, you can file an IC3 complaint with your name, the name of your friend, the amount of money being extorted, and the perp's IP address. Preserve all communication that you can.

And as the kids' say, "Pics or didn't happen." As I seem to recall, some scammer tried to blackmail @Omniscient@ with naughty pics that didn't exist.
