Her father, Liam Walsh from Essex, said that she had been watching self-harm videos on TikTok prior to her untimely death.
A hearing is anticipated to consider the scope of the inquest, including the concerns raised by Maia's father about content on TikTok, and the necessary steps to gather more information about Maia's online activity prior to her death.

yikes that is a disaster :/
This is sad, it is a real issue and unfortunately it does not seem like TikTok is doing enough to stop the spread of self harm videos, hate videos, etc.
As someone who was originally against the ban as of now especially after what I witnessed tonight on my own TikTok which I can explain if anyone would like me to but otherwise I will not, and then seeing this I am not so sure I am against the ban anymore, at minimum it should be 18+ and strictly enforced.

Do you want to tell us? I don't think the ban will happen. There's money in the company. Maybe Trump can force them to let an American company buy whatever it is he wants them to give to an American company for whatever protection against spying.

Well Trump cannot force Bytedance to sell, I did hear something about tariff relief in China for exchange for the purchase of TikTok but I am not sure how that is progressing at all.
Anyways what happened is my TikTok feed went from the usual comedy, food, technology and mostly automotive content to randomly showing me racist content, the first racist video I seen was this black woman blatantly being racist towards white people and calling for the bloodshed of white people so I ended up reporting the video as hateful content which also includes racist content.
Well not too long after that report I get a notification back from TikTok that no violation was found and that TikTok users content will not be removed. Keep in mind during the report process I blocked content from this user.
Well shortly after this I then started getting similar racist content calling for the bloodshed of white people but this time it was from a black male.
This is unacceptable in my opinion, racism should be condemned no matter who it is directed to but TikTok I guess see's different. So when I see that happen with my own eyes and then see this thread in regards to self-harm videos costing the life of that 13 year old kid, yea I am not so sure anymore about being against the ban.
A lot of these harmful challenges that severely injured kids hospitalizing them or in some cases costing their lives also came from TikTok as well so that is another thing to keep in mind. At minimum I feel the app should be 18+ and strictly enforced to not allowed kids or they need to get their shit together and actually make the platform safe for kids by separating their content from people 18+.
TikTok app is so toxic. Looks funny and friendly BUT it's insane toxic even for kids.

I've always liked these topics, my points:
1. TikTok needs to do something about videos like this. TikTok is supposed to be safe, but there are a lot of scams and pornography videos, more than you think.
2. I still don't think TikTok is 100% to blame, since why did the kid do that? There must be some ulterior motive. I don't think he's going to do that just because he sees a video like that. We always blame the platforms, but there's always something behind it. Any kid wouldn't do that.

Trump can say that he will not ban them from the USA if they sell just the US part of the company I think? Who knows if he's even going to get around to it all I guess? But Trump's idea to give them that option sounds potentially good.
When you report content on a lot of platforms it only goes to a bot. No human is making these decisions. And when you appeal a lot of the platforms lie that a human will look at the appeal, but I think it's again done by a bot, or it's done by someone in the third world that has barely any English. Because in 2020 I was temporarily suspended from Twitter for making a joke about Smurfs an 80s TV show and I was told it was hate speech and my appeal upheld that it was hate speech.
For a long time everything from Big Tech has been "moderated" by Ai because Big Tech realised they didn't have to pay people, and could have fatter bottom lines from not paying people.
Now, that's going to happen to the rest of the jobs in the world, and who knows when the greed will end? Who knows when they're going to have to realise that they are messing up the world too much and that it can't go on?
Taxes will no longer be being paid into government coffers because of the mass unemployment. So where will it end?

This is a deeply tragic case, and it highlights the importance of examining the impact of social media on mental health, especially for vulnerable individuals. It's crucial for platforms like TikTok to take responsibility and implement stricter content moderation to protect users.
This is an incredibly sad and troubling situation. The role of social media platforms in shaping the mental health of young users cannot be understated. It’s critical that platforms like TikTok take serious measures to ensure harmful content is swiftly addressed and that mental health resources are more accessible to users.

How many more tragedies do we need before real change is made on social media platforms? It’s not just about removing videos — it’s about preventing them from reaching people who are struggling in the first place. What a tragedy...

Yeah kids were doing that back in the 80s but they didn't have an app to search up videos of people doing it. They showed off to each other ripping beer cans in half and cutting and slashing their arms with it, and tried to get me to join in and I wouldn't and they're like "Why not," and I said "I'm too vain and I don't want scarred arms." haha

That was clever. I really think that social media may be to blame, but at most 1% of the blame lies with the person who creates it, and they are the ones who can do whatever they want with their body. It's simply human stupidity.

its sad all around because a life is lost but the fault lies in the parents not being aware and sometimes even doing everything you can its still unavoidable.
Look at the early internet boxy babe and the large list of dumb things done online by kids and adults like.
The internet is a very google thing like the ice bucket challenge the goal was to bring awareness meanwhile people eating tide pods assuming something good to come out of it amazes me.
This is heartbreaking. I remember being in elementary school and stumbling across some disturbing stuff online—it shook me up for days. Kids’ minds are so vulnerable; they’re not wired to process that kind of content like adults who’ve built some resilience. Makes me wonder if she was already dealing with mental health challenges before this. Thoughts go out to her.
