Can someone please give me some advice on what kind of laptop, operating system, and apps I need to browse the darknet safely and anonymously?
just trying to learn more about privacy, anonymity,
and protecting my personal data online.
What I’m looking for:
– maximum anonymity
– a secure and independent operating system
– protection against tracking
– leaving as few traces as possible on the device itself
I’d appreciate recommendations on:
– a suitable laptop (preferably new or used with no pre-installed software)
– operating systems like Tails, Qubes OS, or others
– tools like VPNs, Tor Browser, or anything else essential
– important do’s and don’ts to stay secure and private
Thanks in advance for your help.
The darknet is not what people on YouTube tell you it is. Yeah there's counterfeits and drugs on there but mostly sold by cops. Get Tor browser and maybe MullVad if you plan on doing any business.
You don't need a special laptop or OS or any of that.
I want to access the darknet,
not to buy or sell anything,
but to learn something new
and explore different ways of making money.
I’m interested in the system, the structures, the ideas –
not the trade
You don't need anything crazy. Tails OS, and a program called Tor will do you fine. And you will need onion links to the pages on the darknet you are looking for.

What would you learn on the dark web you couldn't on the clear web ?
You want to access websites where people do illegal stuff to make money ? Like, from people who scam ? and you expect not being scammed ?
What kind of website you want to browse ? What kind of information are you looking for on the dark web ?
If it's not for illegal things, you can basically do it from the Tor web browser on any operating system
you expect not being scammed ?
no, you can also be scammed in online shops. but i myself have something for sale that is good for students and pupils. and that only works there.

A used ThinkPad with Tails or Qubes OS is a solid start. Combine Tor with a trusted VPN that is VPN first, then Tor if needed. Keep your setup separate and avoid logging into anything personal. Focus on OPSEC and don’t overcomplicate things early on.

You think that there's a good or bad laptop for Tor? It sounds like you already have a good grasp of what you need, although VPNs are generally not recommended. At best it complicates the connection. And I'll let Chornaya Magiya explain how you shouldn't use Tor.
Servus,

The dark web is not what they show on Youtube or tik tok. U can find interesting stuff better on the clear web than you will on the dark web. Its basically forums and dark web markets. Check out darkfail . U dont need any special computer to access the dark web. And you will not find mystery boxes on the dark web either. The darkweb is not as scary as the media / "influencers" make it out to be. Just keep in mind anyone selling guns is prob a fed. They like to target people who commit harden crimes... any hacking service is likely a scam. check out dread, theres a good couple other forums.
Use tor + VPN for maximum protection . THe feds dont care if you buy personal amount of weed. they go after harden drugs ( meth, crack ) . the most you will get is a knock and talk which you should deny everything .
if you use tor make sure that javascript is turn off. any decent dark web site will not use any JS AT ALL..
Also if your looking to start a market; heres a good tip; DONT. u will be looking at LIFE in prison if caught. google other dark web markets admin sentences. its not worth it.
give me your number and ill text it to you
Use any portable OS with persistence and encrypted drive (can be done on any of them) - than use a VPN (Mullvad allow XMR payment) and you should be fine for your thread model...
if you plan on buying selling or hacking you would need an extra layer like Whonix on that portable OS, but you will also need to be very aware of the rest of your opsec and more importantly the actions you take, since you will do some mistakes like everyone and you can't estimate what will be found and how it will be used against you
My thoughts...
What I’m looking for:
– maximum anonymity : Tails ships with Tor Browser and all other traffic goes over Tor
– a secure and independent operating system : Tails or Qubes. I recommend Tails.
– protection against tracking : Tor Browser on Strict mode so JavaScript is disabled.
– leaving as few traces as possible on the device itself : Tails is amnesic. When you shut down, everything is forgotten (unless you save data to the persistent storage)
I’d appreciate recommendations on:
– a suitable laptop (preferably new or used with no pre-installed software) : A cheap Lenovo X240 or newer will suffice. It doesn't need an OS because you would boot Tails from USB.
– operating systems like Tails, Qubes OS, or others : Tails every time over Qubes for simplicity.
– tools like VPNs, Tor Browser, or anything else essential : No VPN needed on Tails. All traffic routes over Tor.
– important do’s and don’ts to stay secure and private : Don't surf the clear web from your Tails setup. It should be strictly for Darknet only. Don't link your clearnet identity to your darkweb identity. E.g. Don't use the username "albertone1" on there.
