Not sure where to post this, since there isn't an official section for this type of thing.. but I would be lying, if I said I wasn't shocked to hear that gwiz went out like that..
Some of these guys are just waiting for their opportunity. Laughing and joking with you daily, pretending that they're genuinely your friend.. just waiting for you to pitch that offer. Don't be the victim to anyone's SCAM. I don't even know the full details of the situation, but I know enough to know that it was a significant amount. There is a reason we have a list of On-Site Trusted MiddleMen.. USE THEM!
Yes, it may drag the time of the deal a bit longer then either party wants, but guess what? It ensures that your money will be sent, and received safely.
Don't allow a few extra minutes, or extra dollars for tipping the MiddleMan, be the reason why you don't use one. It's not a viable excuse. USE ONE. That's what they're there for.

People scam on the internet for a mix of greed, opportunity, and anonymity. It's sad that is how it goes down, but you can't be surprised when it happens. This is why when I run a service.. I never go first, I always receive payment before proceeding with a transfer, and verify who/where money is coming from.

It was a mistake on the buyer’s part, he randomly chose him to be a middleman without doing proper checks. Judging by gwiz profile, he was clearly inexperienced and probably had never handled a transaction of that scale. After receiving the funds, he simply disappeared.
It likely wasn’t a premeditated scam, but when someone suddenly receives money far beyond what they’re used to, it’s not surprising if they decide to cut and run.

I can't say that I'll never go first, but there are only like a handful of people that I would even consider going first with.. and that's because they've given me or shown me a strong reason for why I know they won't run off with the money. And I don't say that lightly, as I don't trust easily.. but I'm usually a very good judge of character.

Ahh, so those are the remaining details I wasn't aware of. I only heard about the amount of money he took.. had no clue that he got randomly summoned to be a middleman. With that being said, you're right.. it likely wasn't something he premeditated.. but it goes to show, that he always had it in him. There are many people out there, even if they don't have money like that.. if put in that position, wouldn't run off with the money. That's a move of a dickhead, in my humble opinion.
If someone is really down on their money.. having a little time under your belt on the forum, a good reputation, and just using your brain a little, you can earn money. Plenty of ways one can hustle on-site. There is no excuse for scamming.. especially someone that trusted you and looked at you as their companion.

Yes, it's certainly an unfortunate situation.. but it's also situations like this, that can open the eyes for others that intend on doing business in the future. They will know to follow the best practices recommended by the forum, rather then just trusting someone they might of gotten cool with.
But as you said, this doesn't take anything away from our thriving community.. users shouldn't allow something like this deter them from conducting business on the site.. as there are a great number of deals that get conducted on-site daily, without any issues or hiccups. We have trusted middlemen, that have held hundreds of thousands of dollars for users over the years.. ensuring that buyers and sellers deals go smoothly.
If Buyers follow the information outlined in the Safe Trading Guide, they you should have a great experience purchasing products and services on the forum.

I am sure he knew what he was doing when he did the scam. I can bet he has multiple accounts on HF ready to start up again to find the next victim.
I seen this too many times. $2,000 AUD isn't much really.
