US Congress to Consider Authorizing Cyber Privateers

An Arizona congressman has proposed a bill that would grant some private individuals authorization to go after cybercriminals engaged in certain categories of cybercrime. Effectively, this would legalize certain aspects of cyber vigilantism, or legitimize people who would be vigilantes. I assume that this bill would follow the hallmarks of the privateers of the high seas.

When can we take back our streets from crime as vigilantes?

It's even funnier when you realize they have to do this because no one smart enough to use a pc in this way wants to work for them in any capacity to begin with.

I'm sure that the NSA has a number of smart enough people who willingly work for them. Not every hacker is an anarchist. It's like saying that state-sponsored hackers are made up.

I think that making things up you think sound good is not smart or adding to any credibility you may have with regards to this topic.

There isn't a line out the door to work at the NSA and the population is aging.

Did the article even specify "NSA"?

- Let's roll with it for the sake of the response.

Not including our civilian buddies, getting into these positions or agency's anyways takes time + clearances.

You don't just wake up 1 day and put a resume into the NSA cybersecurity division.

Most people that want to be apart of it willingly either start from a young age OR transfer over with a military background.

I'm sure you know that SSBI has harsher requirements as well as the other tiers of clearance at that level on the federal + private side because of the trusted workforce 2.0 overhaul that happened recently.

People who take "orders directly from the president" (as the article specifies) do not fall under the category of regular / normal / civilian.

They have clearances and vetted backgrounds via extensive onboarding processes to even be apart of these groups in the first place.

Which is even worse (number wise) in this case when you consider how many people the NSA actually has employed.

The number is roughly 30-40,000 Spoiler (Click to View)

And of that 30-40,000 roughly 3,000-8,000 of them are in cybersecurity offensive / defensive positions. Spoiler (Click to View)

Now factor in the cuts that already happened to the civilian portion of the NSA hires in May of this year.

You can find a source here: https://tadviser.com/index.php/Company:N...ctor_fired

"BUT BRO WHY DOES THIS MATTER??"

This matters because these guys were willing civilians that wanted to be apart of it!!!!

...Huge number right?

Like bruh

In 2023 alone they had to launch a program to hire people and even that produced ONLY 2000 applicants roughly.

You think they were all "smart"?

Lol

You do see the problem here right?

There is no "number of smart people willingly lining up"

That number is less than a few thousand IF that. And that's just who got accepted.

That number just gets lower and lower.

Now all of a sudden they need anime pfp's to counteract sophisticated government tier foreign cyber divisions?

It's comical.

It would be astounding if you could not take it upon yourself to attempt to belittle my response with some made up comment taking an extreme side for some digital "1 up"

Nobody wants to work for the state.

This as we all know is a general statement, not a set in stone fact that is to be believed by the masses and those who spend extensive time in this field that understand the topic like the back of their hand.

More and more programs like this will continue to arise because Nobody wants to work for the state.
