BUILDING YOUR CYBER RANGE
A Complete Guide to Creating a Professional Home Pentest Lab
A Complete Guide to Creating a Professional Home Pentest Lab
Prepare, execute, be safe.
WHY BUILD A LAB?
Want to practice your skills without ending up on an FBI watchlist or breaking production systems and taking a risk? You need a lab. This guide will walk you through building a professional-grade penetration testing environment entirely on your own hardware. This is where you move from theory to mastery.
1. THE PHILOSOPHY
A good lab is a safe, isolated sandbox where you can practice attacks, test tools, and break things without consequence. The three key principles are:
ISOLATION
The lab must never accidentally touch your real network or the internet.
REPRODUCIBILITY
You must be able to easily reset targets to a clean state.
REALISM
The closer your targets mimic real-world systems, the better.
2. THE HARDWARE
PRIMARY OPTION
A single powerful laptop or desktop with enough RAM (16GB minimum, 32GB+ recommended).
BUDGET OPTION
An old PC you have lying around. Add as much RAM as it can take.
PRO OPTION
A dedicated server like a Dell PowerEdge or HP ProLiant bought used on eBay.
⚠️ THE KEY REQUIREMENT
CPU support for virtualization technology (Intel VT-x or AMD-V).
3. FOUNDATION
This is the software that creates and runs your virtual machines (VMs).
FREE OPTIONS
• VirtualBox (completely free)
• VMware Workstation Player (free for personal use)
• Proxmox VE (free, open-source, excellent for dedicated servers)
EXAMPLE: Installing VirtualBox on Ubuntu
Code
sudo apt update
sudo apt install virtualbox virtualbox-ext-pack4. THE NETWORKING
THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT CONFIGURATION
You will use Host-Only Networking.
What it is: Creates a virtual network that only exists between your host machine (your physical computer) and the guest VMs. No internet in, no internet out.
Why it's perfect: It's a completely closed environment. You can simulate entire networks without risking a single packet escaping.
VirtualBox Setup Steps:
1. Go to File > Host Network Manager
2. Click Create
3. A new adapter (e.g., vboxnet0) appears. Configure its IP range (e.g., 192.168.56.1/24)
4. For each VM: Settings > Network, enable Adapter 2, attach to Host-Only Adapter
5. TARGET MACHINES
Time to build your "victims"
DOWNLOAD VULNERABLE VMs
BEGINNER FRIENDLY
• Metasploitable 2 & 3: The classic Linux/Windows targets
EXTENSIVE COLLECTIONS
• VulnHub: Massive collection of VMs of all difficulty levels
• TryHackMe & HackTheBox: Sometimes offer downloadable versions
SETUP PROCESS
1. Import: VirtualBox > File > Import Appliance > select .ova file
2. Network: Ensure target VMs use Host-Only network (Adapter 2)
6. YOUR ATTACK MACHINE
THE STANDARD: Kali Linux
Download the pre-built VM image from the official Kali website. Import it just like your target VMs.
CRUCIAL NETWORK SETUP
Connect your Kali VM to TWO networks:
Adapter 1 - NAT: For updates and new tools
Adapter 2 - Host-Only: To communicate with target VMs
7, FIRST TEST
STEP-BY-STEP VERIFICATION:
1. Boot up your Kali VM and a target VM (e.g., Metasploitable)
2. In Kali terminal, find your Host-Only IP: ip addr show
3. Look for IP on 192.168.56.0/24 range (or your configured range)
4. Find the target's IP (check VM console or run ip addr within it)
5. From Kali, ping the target: ping <target_ip>
SUCCESS INDICATOR
If you get a reply, congratulations! Your cyber range is operational.
8. LAB SCENARIOS
🟢 BASIC LEVEL
Attack the Metasploitable VM from Kali using tools like Nmap, Metasploit, and Hydra.
🟡 INTERMEDIATE LEVEL
Build a mini-network: Kali → Vulnerable Web Server → Internal Database Server
Practice pivoting and lateral movement.
🔴 ADVANCED LEVEL
Create an Active Directory lab with Windows Server Domain Controller and Windows 10/11 client VMs. This is gold for modern pentesting.
Next steps
A home lab is the single best investment you can make in your cybersecurity skills. It's your playground, your classroom, and your testing ground. It allows you to fail in safety, learn from your mistakes, and develop the practical muscle memory that theory alone can never provide.
YOUR FIRST COMMANDS
Code
# Find your targets
nmap -sS -sV 192.168.56.0/24
# Get to work
msfconsole
use exploit/...
set RHOSTS <target_ip>
exploit
PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT
Your lab is your safe space to experiment, fail, learn, and grow.
