Monster: Ed Gein Story Fact vs Fiction

I've just finished watching all 8 episodes of Netflix's newest addition to the Monster series about the Ed Gein Story. They did do a great job with casting. The actors were excellent. However there was a ton of fiction in this series. If you haven't watched this yet and plan on watching it. Stop reading now.

Some things that were fictional.

1. Ed Gein didn't practice necrophilia.
2. Ed Gein didn't have a girlfriend, there was a woman who came forward sometime after his arrest who soon after retracted her statement. Seemed she was crazy and just after her 15 minutes.
3. Ed Gein died a virgin.
4. Ed Gein didn't have sex or any relationship with Bernice Worden.
5. Ed Gein didn't kill anyone with a chainsaw or use a chainsaw in any of his dismemberments.
6. Ed Gein didn't work with authorities to help capture any serial killers.
7. Ed Gein didn't babysit children
8. Ed Gein didn't keep a female body in a chair and call it mother.
9. He never wrote to any other killers nor did they write to him.

I'm honestly very disappointed in how much fiction they stuffed into this story. I think his true story is one disgusting enough they didn't need to add all these fake details. I actually struggled to get through this series and each episode I wanted to turn it off. I give this series 3/10. Only because of the acting.

That's a real shame that they put in so much that wasn't true. That's not what people want. I read they did that with the Menendez brothers too.

Google says he did babysit children (the neighbors), but the show definitely dramatized it by making it seem like it was on purpose so he could then try and have a family.

He didn't use a chainsaw, but the creator of Texas Chainsaw Massacre is on record saying he got inspiration for the story from Ed Gein, which I agree is odd because like you said, he didn't use a chainsaw.

I think Google AI is training on data since after the Netflix series came out. This was the response I was given when I was doing my research.

AI Quote: There’s a well-known rumor that Ed Gein babysat local kids, but there isn’t solid evidence to back it up.

Here’s what’s known:

Ed Gein lived in Plainfield, Wisconsin, a small rural community. People who knew him often described him as socially awkward but generally helpful.

Some neighbors recalled that he occasionally did odd jobs and chores for families, like shoveling snow, repairing items, or helping around farms.

A few secondhand stories—mostly from later interviews and sensationalized books—claimed that he sometimes looked after children or “babysat” for neighbors.

No verified police reports, court records, or first-hand testimonies confirm that he formally babysat two specific kids (or any children). The stories appear to come from hearsay and the way Gein’s legend grew after his arrest in 1957.

So, while he likely interacted with families in his small town, the idea that he regularly babysat children is probably more urban legend than documented fact.

But to be fair, I imagine if parents DID have him babysit their kids, they would never want to admit that, so it's easy to see why theres no official "record" of it.

What show's on Netflix have you been a fan of lately? I'm always down for new recommendations

I haven't been watching Netflix lately since I finished Ed Gein. I've been watching Ray Donovan on Paramount Plus again. I'm about to pause Ray Donovan for a few days to watch Monster in Disguise based on John Wayne Gacy on Peacock probably tomorrow.
