Windows Graphics Vulnerabilities
Are Still Getting Us Pwned in 2025

Alright, that headline just caught my eye. You ever get that moment where you read some exploit breakdown and, like, you half-want to laugh and half-want to throw your laptop into the sun? Because… Microsoft’s still getting boned by graphics APIs. EMF handling. In 2025. GDI, that fossil. Can’t decide if it’s funny or just exhausting.

Legacy Codebase Blues

GDI is like… ancient, right? I have a folder somewhere with, idk, utilities from 2005 that probably still call into this mess. Whole generations of bugs and “patches” layering on top of each other, pretending things are okay, and, surprise! Somebody hits EMF+ with a weird rectangle and now your thumbnail parser is code-exec’ed before breakfast.

Is anybody really surprised by this? I mean, “malformed rectangles lead to heap overflows”this isn’t exactly new. You’d think after, what, a decade of bug bounties and Autobahn-level Patch Tuesdays, Microsoft would have figured out “don’t trust rectangles,” but… here we are. Again.

But honestly, patch notes that mention “incomplete prior fixes” make me wince. Feels like playing whack-a-mole with the lights off. One patch plugs a leak, but then they forgot the bailing bucket’s got a hole at the bottom.

Windows Graphics
(GDI/GdiPlus / EMF/EMF+) Vulnerabilities

Source: https://cybersecuritynews.com/windows-gr...abilities/
  • CVE-2025-30388 (8.8)

  • CVE-2025-53766 (9.8, yeah critical)

  • CVE-2025-47984 (7.5)

Patched, apparently, in:
  • KB5058411

  • KB5063878

  • KB5062553.

GdiPlus.dll and gdi32full.dll got extra checks.

How Close Is Too Close?

Here’s the existential dread: stuff like this never stays “low level,” not for long. Like, parsing image thumbnails or opening a Word doc at work should not equal, “Enjoy your new ransomware.” But it’s all so deeply wired into Windows, and, apparently, Office for Mac and Android too. Cross-ecosystem screw-ups. Nice.

There’s the whole paranoia spiral, how many “malformed” images are out there in the wild right now? Random email attachments, filesharing, someone copying an image into a Teams chat. Half the time you’re not even consciously opening these files; your OS or browser is quietly trying to be helpful, rendering previews. And that’s the attack surface,no admin required, just vibe into someone’s Preview pane and you’re in. If you’re lucky, maybe you catch the process spike in Task Manager before it’s game over.

Patch Cycles and Partial Solutions

So, yeah, Microsoft “patched” it. (Did they really, though? Am I crazy for thinking the next Patch Tuesday will mention another EMF+ bug?) You get your GdiPlus.dll or gdi32full.dll updates, cross your fingers, and, realistically, maybe don’t open EMF files from weird places. Not exactly actionable at scale.

Check Point says “disable EMF rendering in untrusted contexts.” That’s cute. I’d like a pony, too. Most users don’t know what an EMF IS, let alone how to toggle rendering for it, and some sysadmin is probably knee-deep in this because his document management app barfs on “invalid rectangle objects” from files scanned 12 years ago.

Anyone else feel like we’re locked in this endless back-and-forth where the “fix” is just adding one more fence post, but the wolves keep getting smarter? I mean, sure, keep patching, but this whole category of bugs is just going to hang around as long as legacy code does.

This Never Ends

Don’t even know what my point is, except… the only thing more reliable than a new zero-day is that it’s gonna land somewhere stupidly deep in the stack. Is there a “fix” that’s not just crossing our fingers and hoping the next round of fuzzing finds the holes before someone nastier does?

Anyway. Rant over. Maybe? Opinions, war stories, clever mitigations? (Or do we just keep collecting these CVEs like Pokémon and call it threat intelligence?)
