Hi everyone,
I’d like to introduce POOM, an open-source, pocket-sized hardware tool we’ve been building for wireless forensics, security research, and ethical pentesting.
POOM was designed specifically for defensive use cases: understanding RF environments, auditing IoT deployments, and learning how modern wireless systems
Why POOM?
Most portable tools still focus heavily on 2.4 GHz. POOM is built around the ESP32-C5, which enables native 5 GHz Wi-Fi alongside other radios, making it far more relevant for modern networks.
Core capabilities (for research & forensics)
Wi-Fi 2.4 GHz + 5 GHz
Packet capture (PCAP)
AP analysis & environment mapping
Controlled Evil Twin / captive portal simulations (lab use)
BLE + Zigbee / Thread (802.15.4)
Multi-protocol observation
IoT ecosystem visibility
NFC / HF-RFID (13.56 MHz)
Card reading, emulation, and analysis
Intended for access-control research & auditing
Forensics-friendly
PCAP export
Offline analysis with Wireshark
No cloud dependency
Maker / Research extensions
Qwiic (I²C) connector for GPS, sensors, time-correlation, etc.
Fully scriptable and extensible firmware
Philosophy
Open-source hardware & firmware
Built for learning, auditing, and controlled environments
POOM is currently live on Kickstarter and already funded.
Thanks — and looking forward to constructive feedback from the community.
