Why is crime so cheap even when one is taking a lot of risk?
I know a lot of cybersecurity professionals paid really good salaries to hack
Yet people take risk for $500 and call it good money.
Why? I'm trying to wrap my head around it.

Criminals are often desperate and low-skilled. They often come from a culture of corruption like Nigeria or Pakistan where theft from Westerners isn't even frowned on. Also $500 to one person may not be much but in India for example that's about 6 weeks average income. These places don't hunt cyber criminals very much either so risk vs reward weighs in their favor.

Cost of living for some I think... there are places that cost only a few $ per day to live in areas, so 1 theft can fund them for weeks, months, or years.

But you are right. There isn't enough money to justify it for most, and then also the value of building a whitehat career is worth far more in my opinion.

Unless you're pulling off a big heist, you won't beat the millions of dollars a whitehat person makes in tech on average over their career. And you'll never do it without exposing yourself to a ton of risk

The posters above have mentioned one possible reason for why people do it.

I'd like to add another reason why people do it. Because they like the thrill off it. Some people get introduced to doing this crime rather early and they sort of get in that zone and among a group of other criminal. It becomes a source of not only living but a life style. Some people get a thrill rush from it aside from the money.
