AADE 16.9 —
Hey everyone, I've been building a Python IDE for a while now and I'm finally ready to share it.
If you've used Thonny, you'll probably notice the influence. I love its clean, no-nonsense look and how it stays out of your way. That simplicity was the design target for AADE — but instead of keeping it minimal, I built a full autonomous AI agent into the core of it. Same approachable feel, very different under the hood.
What it does
Point it at any OpenAI-compatible API — OpenAI, DeepSeek, Ollama, LM Studio, whatever you have — and AADE wraps it in a full autonomous agent loop. The AI drafts a plan, you approve it, and it works through your goal step by step with a 40-step budget. You can redirect or interrupt it mid-run. If the AI needs a capability it doesn't have, it can write a Python tool, save it, and start using it in the same session. It also has cross-session memory so context carries over between runs.
Getting started with your API
After install, open the settings/api/ folder in the app directory. You'll find two ready-to-go example config files — one for OpenAI and one for DeepSeek. Just paste your key in and you're set. Any other OpenAI-compatible provider works the same way, just swap the base URL and model name.
To load your API config in AADE, open the Agent panel and click Load API File — it's located next to the model selector and the Chat/Agent toggle.
If you're not sure where to start, I personally recommend using a DeepSeek API key. The pricing is extremely low compared to most providers and in practice it ends up being almost free for typical usage while still performing very well for coding and tool generation.
Fair warning — this is an unlocked agent
The AI can write and execute code on your machine. That's the point, but it's worth being upfront about: it has real access to your filesystem and environment. It's not sandboxed.
The basics
PyQt6 desktop app, Windows installer included
Linux source available
No account, no telemetry, free
Status bar shows live token count and running API cost
