High settings vs smooth gameplay

Do you guys prefer max graphics or just stable high FPS?

I used to push everything to ultra but now I’d rather have smooth gameplay than visuals.

What’s your priority when gaming?
I’m more of a “smooth > shiny” guy these days. I’ll crank settings up just enough to keep the visuals recognizable, then lock the FPS around 144 – 165 so the mouse feels buttery. Lately I’ve been tweaking motion‑blur and ambient‑occlusion off; the performance jump is surprisingly clean, and I barely miss the extra polish. How do you handle the trade‑off on titles that lock you into a 60 Hz mode?

Depends on the genre for me. If it's fast-paced or competitive, I'll try to prioritize frame quantity over quality. Something like a singleplayer story or more relaxed multiplayer game though? Cranking up my graphics and hoping I don't dip below 60FPS.
My CPU bottlenecks me entire setup. I have an i7-9700k with an RTX 4070 and in the end I get more fps on high settings than I do on low.

Both. I built my setup to be able to run my most demanding games, and brand new ones at max settings on 2k (180fps) for the next couple years before i need to OC or upgrade to AM5 and DDR5. GTA 6 next year is gonna be the real test. But with that said each game is different, some are heavy CPU some are heavy GPU core, and some heavy GPU VRAM. I monitor mine with OCCT while playing.

Ultra settings, ray/path tracing max, quality DLSS, and 4x frame gen. Nothing bottlenecks for me currently.
i don't game anymore but when i did play, i played on low settings so i can get max fps,
but got flamed for it from my friends for playing low settings

i personally like performance over high settings,
if i had a nasa computer, definitely higher settings or settings to give me advantages without cheating is the best.
Depends on the game. If I'm playing a game like battlefield i would prefer high fps but if I'm playing a more laid back game like Minecraft high settings would be more important.
Generally speaking I prefer to have smooth and stable gameplay at a decent FPS above anything else. That goes all the more so if I'm playing anything PvP due to the increased importance of stability, FPS, no stutters, etc. I don't mind a hit to graphics in order to achieve that if need be either. If I'm playing a single player game then I would probably at least try to push more towards the better graphics side of things, but again while still above anything else wanting smooth and stable gameplay at a reasonable FPS.
