I think FireFly Studios never managed to recreate the success of their older games, specifically Stronghold and Stronghold Crusader.
Stronghold Crusader is an all-time classic for me. Even among the OG RTS games I love, it always stood out and felt different to play.
A while ago I heard the studio was releasing the game again on a modern engine with countless fixes and more content. At first I assumed it was fan-made news, since I’ve seen plenty like that. Then I saw the original channel release preview videos and was surprised by the pricing. Yes, it’s a cash grab, but a respectful one: more content, fixes, and a clear roadmap.
They recently released new content with a long-awaited AI, Baldwin. Anyone who watched Kingdom of Heaven probably wondered why that wasn’t in the game from the start.
I had a couple of chances to play it — it’s fun and a decent trip down memory lane. I’m not ecstatic that most new content is paid DLC, but at $3 per pack I can let it slide.
If you played the originals and want to revisit the good old glory days, definitely give it another look.
That's about it.
