If you were to start learning Python right now, where would you begin?

Google is your friend, find a project, then start embarking on learning enough to complete it.

How long does it take to learn Python?
Depends, how long is a piece of string?
You can truly never learn everything there is to know about something.

Find a project, complete it, you've learnt enough to say you've done something so by that metric you've learnt it.

Freecodecamp and its takes approx 2.5 months for complete beginner.
If you want to shortcut in 2026,

not being rude to OG's but, you can start a small project and get AI to tell you to explain like your 10 as well as telling you the importance of each line, to break sections so you can recognize the tools, functions, loops etc.

It has come to the day where AI has a Valid input, most can agree that it has helped and some will stay solid with their ideology,

the important thing is, make sure you have a brain that can understand and think out the box because it's about how you ask the questions.

srsly go get a cheap coding subscription and use that LLM to teach you how to code python. itll be the best tutor for you.

OpenAI codex is probably best for money, but open source providers exist as well.

Cheap coding subscriptions? Where thou

20 dollars at openai will get you started, not a ton of usage. 100 bucks you'll likely not hit the limits especially while learning.

anthropic/claude ai has a 20 dollar plan.

I'd recommend one of those

openai 20 dollar plan using gpt 5.6 luna will get you decently far. claudes limits suck.

z.ai or kimi are decent ish options too

i guess cheap is subjective though.

if you know basic programming, just go straight making a project and learn while you're at it. I mean, I'm not sure if this would work for you. But this is usually how I learn and it's 100x effective for me. I tried reading stuff, or watching courses but without hands-on practice I would just forget it and I would have to rewatch again or re-read which is really annoying. It's basically a loop. But when I go straight making a project, I usually remember most of it and sometimes discover different use cases and or how it works behind the scene.
https://automatetheboringstuff.com/ is imo one of the best starting for beginners, starting with fundamentals and useful practice projects

also depends what are you learning python for, as the language itself is very easy but very versatile

Great advice there. The best approach is indeed to decide on a fairly simple project and then work until it's complete.

Depends how you learn but you got the jist
If I were starting Python right now I wouldn't open ten courses. I'd pick one small project and finish it.

Something like: pull a public page, write a CSV, then add error handling, then a tiny Flask page on top. Official docs plus that one project beats forty YouTube playlists.

If you already have a goal, start there. The language sticks when it has a job to do.
