HF Notify
A notification bell for your Hack Forums toolbar.
A notification bell for your Hack Forums toolbar.
With HF’s notification service currently down, I built HF Notify to help members keep track of their activity. It uses the HF API to check for updates and displays them in a bell directly on HF. It works independently of the websocket notification service.
What does it notify you about?
- Post quotes: See who quoted you in a tracked thread.
- Thread replies: Get alerts when someone replies to your threads or threads you’ve participated in.
- Private messages: See unread counts and new-message activity.
- Contracts: See new requests and status changes, including the other member, deal type, and available amounts or items.
- Bytes: See incoming transfers, who sent them, and the reason when one is provided.
- Other contract activity: Alerts for disputes and received business ratings.
Click an alert to open the relevant HF page. You can also filter notification categories, mark alerts as read, manually follow a thread, and enable optional desktop alerts or sounds.
How to install
1. Install Tampermonkey
Install Tampermonkey in the browser you use for HF:
Get Tampermonkey
2. Install HF Notify
Visit the installation page:
HF Notify — Installation
Or open the userscript directly:
Install the HF Notify userscript
Tampermonkey should display an installation screen. Click Install.
3. Refresh Hack Forums
A bell should appear in the HF toolbar. On desktop, look in the lower navigation row alongside the other toolbar icons.
4. Connect your HF account
Click the bell, select Connect HF, and complete the authorization on Hack Forums.
Return to HF and open the bell. It should show your username once the browser is linked.
5. Let the first sync finish
HF Notify establishes a starting point for your activity and begins checking for new updates. Older thread participation is indexed gradually, so it will not immediately import every historical notification.
Don’t see the bell?
- Make sure the userscript is installed and enabled in Tampermonkey.
- Check that Tampermonkey is allowed to run on hackforums.net.
- If your browser shows an Allow user scripts setting in Tampermonkey’s extension details, enable it.
- Refresh HF after making changes.
- Signing in on the HF Notify website alone does not link the userscript. Use Connect HF from the bell on HF.
How quickly do notifications arrive?
This uses polling, so alerts are not instant.
The server normally checks about every 90 seconds, and the bell refreshes every 30 seconds. Expect roughly 1–2 minutes while HF is open. Older tracked threads, API limits, or service interruptions can take longer.
A few current limitations
- Quote detection covers tracked threads; it is not a sitewide search for every mention or quote.
- HF’s API provides PM counts, but not the sender, subject, or message content. Open your inbox for those details.
- Convo is not included.
Feedback
If something looks wrong, reply here with the notification type, roughly when the activity happened, and what you expected to see. Please don’t post API keys, authorization tokens, or private message contents.
