Five years ago, cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was fatally shot during the filming of Rust in New Mexico, setting off a chain reaction that would destroy careers, divide public opinion, and transform a routine film rehearsal into one of Hollywood's most devastating tragedies.
On October 21, 2021, cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, a 42-year-old mother and rising talent, was fatally shot during filming near Santa Fe, New Mexico. The tragedy unleashed years of criminal investigations, lawsuits, and public scrutiny that would engulf everyone connected to the production.
Although Rust was eventually completed in Montana and released in 2025 to middling reviews, the shadow of Hutchins' death has never left the film.
Of all those caught up in the aftermath, armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed emerged as the only person to serve significant prison time. Convicted of involuntary manslaughter in 2024, she was sentenced to 18 months behind bars for her role in the chain of failures that led to live ammunition being present on the set.
Today, her life bears little resemblance to the Hollywood career she once pursued.
Now 29, Gutierrez-Reed works out of a tattoo shop in Arizona, running a piercing business called Little Pricks Piercings while training to become a tattoo artist. The young armorer whose name was once splashed across headlines appears determined to leave the film industry behind and start over.

But the memories of Rust remain impossible to escape.
At sentencing, Gutierrez-Reed pleaded with the judge for mercy.
"Your Honor, when I took on Rust, I was young and naive. But I took my job as seriously as I knew how to."
Fighting back tears, she added:
"I beg you, please, don't give me more time. The jury has found me in part at fault for this horrible tragedy, but that doesn't make me a monster. That makes me human."
The judge was unconvinced.
"You were the armorer, the one that stood between a safe weapon and a weapon that could kill someone," he told her.
"But for you, Ms. Hutchins would be alive. A husband would have his partner and a little boy would have his mother."
The shooting itself remains a haunting moment in modern film history. Actor Alec Baldwin was rehearsing with a revolver when the weapon discharged,![[Image: 57053911-16227655-image-a-250_1792603303569.jpg]](https://i.dailymail.com/1s/2026/10/21/18/57053911-16227655-image-a-250_1792603303569.jpg)
The weapon discharged killing Hutchins and wounding director Joel Souza. Criminal charges against Baldwin were later dismissed after prosecutors were found to have withheld evidence from the defense.

In the immediate aftermath, police body-camera footage captured Gutierrez-Reed in shock.
"I just [expletive] up my whole entire career," she told officers.
Asked if she was the film's armorer, she replied:
"I am, or at least I was."
Then came the words that would define her
"Welcome to the worst day of my life."
The daughter of veteran Hollywood armorer Thell Reed, Gutierrez-Reed has since abandoned her ambitions in the movie business. While other figures connected to the tragedy have continued with legal battles or faded from public view, she is attempting to rebuild her life far from the spotlight. Attempting being the operative word.
Yet no reinvention can erase the event that forever linked all their names
