Breakthrough MIT Discovery Doubles Lithium-Ion Battery Capacity
Moore’s law has held fast for processors, making our smartphones increasingly more powerful each year. However, battery technology continues to be a frustrating obstacle. Although our phones are more intelligent with battery life management, we have been using essentially the same kinds of batteries for twenty years with only incremental boosts to performance. A company that was spun out from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has developed a new type of lithium metal battery that it says can last twice as long as normal smartphone or laptop batteries. This design is in alignment with current manufacturing procedures, which means these double-charged batteries could be hitting the market as early as next year.

Google Duo Now #1 in Top Free chart, Available Globally
Although it has only been around since the start of the week, it looks like Google’s new video calling app is already a smash hit around the globe. In fact, after only a few days of release, it is now the No. 1 app in the Play Store, surpassing the likes of Pokemon Go and Facebook’s Messenger. Google Duo is a video calling app and just a video calling app—it does one-to-one video calls and nothing else. It is also only available for mobile phones—there are no Web, Chrome, or desktop clients. It does not even require a Google Account—Google says that "all you need is your phone number and you’ll be able to reach people in your phone’s contacts list."

Seagate Unveils World's Largest SSD
Last week, Samsung announced that it had created the world's largest SSD, a 15.36TB drive that cost $10,000. This week, Seagate quadrupled that. The 60TB drive, intended for use in enterprise data centers, is 45TB larger than Samsung's PM1633a, which began shipping in March. Both drives use the Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) interface for compatibility with servers, which means they will not work in the average PCI-based home PC. Seagate says it could potentially scale up storage to 100TB in that same format, which I am sure does not make Samsung feel any better.

1.4 Billion Android Devices Vulnerable to Hijacking
Eight out of 10 Android devices are vulnerable to be spied on thanks to a Linux TCP bug. A week ago it was discovered that a majority of the people on the internet were vulnerable due to a TCP implementation flaw in Linux. An assistant professor of Computer Science at the University of California at Riverside, Zhiyun Qian, claims it's not a hard thing to exploit--he says, "It can be done easily by anyone in the world." Researchers at Lookout have warned that Eight out of 10 Android devices are open to spying, as they are vulnerable to the bug.

Hackers Claimt to be Selling NSA Hacking Tools
A group of hackers named "The Shadow Brokers" leaked complicated coding to hack into computers to the public this past Saturday. The Shadow Brokers have said they will be putting up an auction involving "cyber weapons." According to the group, the tools were created by a part of the NSA called the "Equation Group." The Equation Group is affiliated with intelligence agencies with four other allies including Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the UK. The nations form what's called "The Five Eyes."

Omegle Leaks Dirty Chats and Personal Info
Omegle, the service that allows users to chat with strangers 'anonymously' over text or webcam, records all chats. If you share personal details including your name, phone number, or email address with anyone on the service, you're no longer anonymous. The recorded conversations are stored so that anyone with a little knowledge of hacking can access them, revealing personal information alongside dirty chats that could be used to harass or blackmail users. Indian bug hunter, Indrajeet Bhuyan, showed how Omegle saves screenshots of every 'anonymous' chat on a specific location on their web server so that they can be downloaded by anyone with any knowledge on website structure.

New Resident Evil 7: Biohazard Gameplay!
Resident Evil 7's latest demo entitled Lantern showcases a narrative structure driven by sinister characters and set-piece moments. There is a renewed focus on survival horror which is exactly what fans have been requesting since Resident Evil 5 came out 7 years ago. The Lantern demo highlights the return to what Resident Evil was at its core. In contrast to Beginning Hour, Lantern is actually part of the final game. However, it only acts as a brief flashback sequence following a peripheral storyline that may or may not affect Resident Evil VII's main narrative. The sequel will include numerous VHS tapes that allow you to play these tangential sections. They essentially replace the audio logs and notes found in previous titles. The Lantern demo follows a girl named Mia as she is hastily pursued by a menacing old woman after emerging from the swamp and into an old decrepit shack. As Mia, you entere the shack and your sole objective appears in white text on the screen: "Don't Get Caught." Throughout the demo, Mia must evade the old woman as she spouts profanity at whoever she thinks is present. The old woman's lantern is what alerts you to her presence and when to hide to avoid capture. As players search for objects, hide behind cabinets, and avoid her gaze, the tension slowly mounts, until you know exactly what you have to do but have to wait for the precise moment to do it. That is what Resident Evil hopes to do for its players this time around. The lantern-carrying villain of the new demo is one of numerous characters Resident Evil VII will use to drive its branching storyline forward and inspire fear in its players. The team behind Resident Evil 7 may not be able to please all of the fans, but in breaking from series tradition, Resident Evil 7 seems to have a distinct appeal of its own. Resident Evil 7 is set for a January 24 release date.
