What is consciousness and how would someone know if they are fully aware of it?

How do we think our thoughts? Like, I'm aware our conscious gives us the ability to have the inner monologue we have. But, How does it work? Like is there any scientific explanation of it? Or, Is it an undiscovered wonder of the world? It fascinates me to think about it. Especially when I'm stoned. Like now.
