I personally hate when people do this. I don't see why the OP doesn't just post the information he would send in the PM in the thread. It just wastes my time having to post, then having to PM, then having to wait, when I could just see the information right away.

Why do you hate this. Has been a part of giveaways for as long as I can remember. I think the real reason behind this suggestion is that you are not ub3r and cannot receive ub3r giveaways because you cannot post.

Even in the l33t and ub3r section people still do it, so it doesn't filter out leechers. And one way or another a leecher can get it. If somebody gives me something for free I will always post a thank you in their thread and a lot of people do, keeping it alive.
Also it is a hassle for them too, having to PM every person that wants it. And when the thread/user goes dead, so does the information. To all the people saying I am ungrateful, I am grateful I always say thank you, it is just wasted effort. And @ Candlejack. + Bigandrewgold, personally, I would not consider myself a leech it is just a suggestion, as it would save time on both ends. And post+pm does not stop leechers at all to whoever thinks that it does. The only valid reason I have seen was for people wanting + rep, but regardless I will +rep if I find the information reputable.
