We are installing this now.
Please note that it's OPTIONAL. If you have an existing account this does not replace your login.
But we'll offer Google, Facebook, Twitter, and Discord as options to register and login for new members. We will quickly see in the coming weeks how popular the feature is.

That's great news! Hopefully this will be a positive change for HF.
Question, how will you handle usernames of the users that register using the Social Media login feature? Using (part of) their email might reveal personal information.

Not sure about other sites, but i think for discord it uses your username with the disc code "name#0000"

Yes, so if you do that with your google/facebook account your name/email will most likely show. In that case it might not be a bad idea to show a pop up when users first log in where they can enter a username.
I think it would be a good alternative option to have, it is faster and more efficient for mobile users and convenient for those who wish to use it.
Integrating Discord would be a good option too, an option to show your discord username on your profile would be great too. (Optional obviously)
I’m all for this.

Anyone can check how many registrations we get by using the memberlist: https://hackforums.net/memberlist.php
We have indeed had an increase in registrations for a running 24 hour period since we added the social media login and it hasn't even been active for a full 24 hours yet. 😉

If you're reading this thread you are already a member so you can't login with your social account.

I think so...

I personally wouldn't use it, but that's a personal preference. I never use the social media login just because of privacy reasons.
But in my honest opinion, "HACK"forums, I'm not sure how new users/visitors can trust logging in through their social media on a "hack" forum because the word "hack" usually brings negative thoughts along.
Also I'm not sure if it'll be chaotic in the database, and it may be a waste of time for you if nobody uses it.
On the other hand, it's a very easy way to login immediately, but as stated above, I'm just not sure how many people would be using it.
DO NOT DEAL WITH THIS MEMBER

nice feature but as that page shows people sign up but arent actually active which tells me people are signing up to buy a product and then leave. as out of last 7 pages literally like 3 members have 1 or more posts. almost looks like a bunch of bots are signing up lol
so probably have to use another way to calculate activity as just cause members are signing up doesnt mean they are helping site. they just boosting registration numbers.

The steps needed to be part of HF.
1. Find HF, probably via Google.
2. Join and become a member.
3. Post and repeatedly visit.
4. Upgrade and contribute HQ content.
So the social logins at least get us past step #2 for a wider audience. We already have done a lot of SEO work which is really helping us get visitors. The social login has increased registrations. Now we just have to get members to participate. One step at a time is how you build up a successful site.
I don't use any social media except for Snapchat so unless I can login with that I prefer it to be "custom".
