Akihabara's Moe Queen

The 17 year old Airi was crowned the most beautiful moe girl of Tokyo's Akihabara district in the 3rd Annual Moe Queen Contest on Saturday at the Akihabara UDX building. Airi is a second-year high school student who works as a server at Akihabara Music Cafe & Bar 441.
The contest seeks out the most moe waitresses in cosplay and maid cafes in Akihabara (as well as the Ikebukuro and Nakano areas). The 12 top choices competed in the finals, performing musical acts like singing and dancing.

The contest was moderated by the "Untouchables" comic duo member Hidetsugu Shibata and Ichiho Shirahata. Airi was awarded 100,000 yen (about US$1,100) and a debut CD contract. During the contest, she performed her original song "Magical☆Twintails."

Toyota's Official Girls und Panzer Car

Automobile museum Toyota Auto Salon Amlux began a Girls und Panzer-themed event on Saturday. The event runs until February 11 with activities such as a stamp rally, a bingo tournament, 2000GT plastic model building, a Gran Turismo game simulation competition, a safety driving test via a simulator — and a Toyota itasha car decorated with an official Girls und Panzer decals.

The Girls und Panzer anime began airing in Japan in October, and a Jōyō Shimbun newspaper article reported that a sequel is being tentatively planned, in addition to the upcoming episodes #11 and #12 which are scheduled for March 2013. However, publicity representative Yūji Hirooka denied any plans of a second season.

Reality Show Recreates Famous Anime & Manga Scenes

This month, the new reality television program Yūmei Manga Jikken Gekijō Dekiru de Show!? will challenge comedians to recreate a famous scene from manga or anime in each episode. In the first episode on Sunday, Hidetsugu Shibata of the comedy duo Untouchable will try to recreate the Galaxy Express 999 anime's title vehicle as its soars through space — by launching into the stratosphere on a weather balloon with a camera.

Future episodes will attempt to recreate Rurouni Kenshin's Modoshigiri slice, Ryuk's levitation in Death Note, Hunter X Hunter's Janjan-ken attack, Fist of the North Star's Hyakuretsu-ken (Hundred Crack Fist/"A-TA-TA-TA-TA") attack, Space Battleship Yamato's launch, Cyborg 009's acceleration mode, and Pro Golfer Saru's flag-curve shot.

The show will run for eight weekly episodes on BeeTV, a television channel for mobile phones.

Hello Kitty Evangelion Plush

The department store ZOZOTOWN has begun selling more Evangelion Hello Kitty merchandise, with their pre-orders for Evangelion Unit-01 Hello Kitty plushies and keychains. The plush will cost 2,100 yen (about US$24), and the keychain will cost 1,050 yen (about US$12). Both will begin shipping sometime in mid-March.

Japanese phone strap online retailer Strap-ya has begun selling different Neon Genesis Evangelion-cosplaying Hello Kitty iPhone 5 cases. The transparent cases features Sanrio's Hello Kitty mascot herself dressed as Evangelion Unit-01, along with other designs of items and creatures from the series, including a Kitty-deformed version of an Angel. Both designs made out of poly carbonate, titled “Spear of Longinus” and “Second Apostle”, cost 1.980 yen (about $22).

P.A. Work's Anime Concert

A joint concert is to be held in April for the anime series True Tears, Hanasaku Iroha, and Tari Tari — three anime created by the studio P.A. Works. Musical performers who contributed to the three titles' songs will participate, including eufonius and Aira Yuki for True Tears; nano.RIPE, Sphere, and Clammbon for Hanasaku Iroha; and AiRI and the Shirahamazaka High School Chorus Club for Tari Tari.

Eufonius, the musical unit which included vocalist riya and composer Hajime Kikuchi, went on hiatus last fall. Kikuchi stepped away from the unit last September due in part to his denigrating comments toward singer Halko Momoi on Twitter in August. Kikuchi later apologized for his comments. The concert's website does not state whether riya will perform alone, or if both of them will participate.

The concert will be held on April 14 at 5:00 p.m. at the Disney Resort's Maihama Amphitheater, which just opened last September. Tickets will be available online starting January 19 for 8,000 yen (around US$90).

Fate/Zero

Genres: Action, Fantasy, Supernatural

Synopsis
Fate/Zero takes place 10 years prior to the events of Fate/stay night, detailing the events of the 4th Holy Grail War in Fuyuki City. The War of the Holy Grail is a contest in which seven magi summon seven Heroic Spirits to compete to obtain the power of the "Holy Grail," which grants a miracle. After three inconclusive wars for the elusive Holy Grail, the Fourth War commences.

Founded by the Einzbern, Makiri, and Tohsaka families centuries ago, the Einzbern family is determined to achieve success after three successive failures, no matter the cost. As a result, they have elected to bring the hated magus killer, Kiritsugu Emiya, into their ranks, despite his methods and reputation as a skilled mercenary and a hitman who employs whatever he can use to accomplish his goals. Though Kiritsugu had once wanted to become a hero who could save everyone, he has long since abandoned this ideal upon realizing that saving one person comes at the cost of another's life. For the sake of humanity, he will ruthlessly destroy anything and anyone who threatens the peace of others.

However, Kiritsugu finds himself deeply torn between the love he has found for his new family - his wife Irisviel and their daughter Illya - and what he must do to obtain the Holy Grail. Meanwhile, Kiritsugu's greatest opponent appears in the form of Kirei Kotomine, a priest who cannot find any sense of fulfillment in his life and sets his sights on Kiritsugu as the possible answer to the emptiness he feels.

I never knew there was such a thing as ''moe contests''. I thought moe was just a weaboo myth. The stuff you learn. And even though I never watched Evangelion, someone give me that damn Hello Kitty plush. ^^
