Is RATing hacking/Does RATing make you a hacker?

Simple question, does RATing make you a hacker/is it hacking?

Quote:A hacker is someone who seeks and exploits weaknesses in a computer system or computer network.

There seems to be a lot of arguing going on in this section regarding RATing's stance in "hacking"

Let me break it down for people who don't know what a RAT is, even though most of you do.

RATing is when you send someone an infected link laced with a Silent Java Drive By/Reg Java Drive by or an infected download that grants the attacker master backdoor access to someones computer.

With the RAT on the machine we can analyze files, execute commands, view through victims webcam, view their desktop etc etc.

So what's the process of RATing?

Point and click basically.

Download a program, set up no-ip, build server, spread server, gain slaves.

Does this REALLY seem like hacking? You probably thought hacking looked like fucking around in a *nix terminal throwing commands like top and netstat. But nope, people do consider RATing hacking.

There are also bind/reverse payloads which serve the same purpose, but it's not really point and clicking, there is executing commands as well. But that's not the point.

My thoughts:

I don't really consider RATing hacking, mainly for the sole reason it's more of a point & click process. BUT, also, in the technical terms it is "hacking" because you're illegally gaining access to someones system/network according to Wikipedia and other sources, if you understand the entire process, like why you use port forwarding and you understand how the commands were made(not just, oh, they programmed it, like cold hard detail is what I mean) etc then sure by all means go ahead.

But if you're someone who downloads Dark Comet to take peoples runescape accounts and claim you're a hacker then i don't even know.

So the whole point is, do you think RATing makes you a hacker/hacking?

You can use this layout to make it nice and neat :)

Do you believe RATing makes you a hacker, and is it considered hacking?
if you coded the rat(without c+p'ing), then yeah.

Yeah, but what about the kids who download it with no knowledge?
I don't think so. All you're doing is tricking someone into getting your rat on their computer (somehow). And then the rat gives you certain access to their computer. I see no vulnerability being exploited (other than human stupidity). The first person to ever RAT someone? They were a hacker, whoever they were. And even if you were to program your own rat that simply makes you a computer programmer. because the Idea of a Remote Administration Trojan is already out there. So unless you added some creative, functional new aspect to the RAT, then I'd say no. Ratting doesn't make you a hacker. It makes you a criminal. Nothing more/less. Hacking is about finding original answers to new problems, not to repeat something that people have already done.

Blackhat skiddiez.
for me I split up everything into sections:
-backtrack - skid(not saying using backtrack makes you a skid, I am simply implying that is my level on using it(tbh, I don't even have it installed)).
-Delphi - intermediate(advanced)
-C++ - beginner(advanced)
-php - beginner(advanced)
-html(scripting advanced)
etc.

I define "skid" as someone who uses someone elses tools or c+p sources together to make a rat.

edit:
I guess it might be considered hacking if you take into account the se'ing involved lolz
I like the responses guys, keep them coming.

but with a rat you can exploit their computer for your personal gain, e.g. install adware for money, use em for ddosing your friend, use them as a proxy, satisfy your sadistic personality by turning their volume to 100% + opening a screamer 🎉

You have a good point, I just don't feel that Ratting is enough for people to call themselves a hacker. But If they did other stuff too then its not like RATting would make them less of a hacker...
In my opinion, if you didn't write the RAT yourself then your just a skid i suppose. But black hats gain money (generally) from they're exploits. So i suppose they are, im kind of on the fence about it.
Skill wise its not hacking. Its simply a program that has a nice GUI that makes it easy for skids to use.
Well it means what you mean by "Hacker" Theres skids out there that think they are "hackers" because they DDoS -.- and rats and kl's arent really that hard especially if you download it.
na not really lol all your doing is making a program and uploading it not really hacking
