Floating Island (redesign)

I am getting ready to completely redesign a piece I did in 2011 for print.
The original is only 1366x768 (72) max size, as it was done as a wallpaper. I am now doing it at 6000x5000 (300DPI) so it can be printed as one of my launch shirts in my clothing line up.

Rather than redesigning it exactly as it is now, which I have considered, I want to add a bit of variation. This was made 3 years ago and I now have 3 years more experience then I had at the time. I'm looking for input on elements that could be added. I'm thinking I'm going to add some variation in the islands and some flags, ropes, lines, vines, bridges, something connecting them all. I will probably add some gold statues and such. I will also add more interesting rock formations on the smaller islands. I'll be adding more variation in the foliage, such as flowers and shit. I'm thinking about having the background less empty but that's one of the last things I'll touch so nothing is set in stone there.

As far as things to add or take away, what are your opinions?

This is the original:

and lighting
people are just learning this stuff today, can't wait to see the redesign
Composition is boring, you pretty much have your piece divided into 3 equal parts and there is almost no visual flow as your eyes immediately go to the center. The floating things on the left and right are good, I like how you incorporate lighting into it to make it more realistic. But the floating center block with the temple on it still needs work, the glass shattering effect (not sure if it's broken glass or water but I'll just assume glass :P) looks out of place so you should work on that as well.
