Hi,
I know this has been suggested and denied, but hopefully I can provide substantial enough examples of where less then 4 characters are needed instead of two in the search box.
1. What if I need to check for a scam report against someone like Omni who's UID is 1? Nah that's just a joke...
Here are the real examples:
1. If I'm looking up for example "CMD" tricks. Not many people use the word command prompt in their titles, but use CMD instead, therefore it's quite hard to find a thread in that topic.
2. If I want to find threads about "VCW"'s for ewhoring, I wouldn't be able to because it's 3 char. Nobody types in "Virtual Cam Whore" as their title...
3. What if I want to search up "XBL" to find codes or to find someone selling them...
4. Even needing to use the word "the" wouldn't work because it's 3 chars.
5. If I want to look up "OG" or "GT", wouldn't work either.
I've posted a poll to see who would like this feature and who wouldn't.
I hope the evidence I gave was good enough, and I hope you will take this into consideration, and not just close it right away.
Thanks for your time!
This is not going to happen, there was a thread about this recently and Omniscient didn't seem to recognize it as something he would use for HF.

But it's so useful, and it only lessens by 1 or 2 chars, I doubt something so bad could happen.

Think about it this way, how many topics are there on the forums? 2,864,855. Every time you use the search function it has to query the database and look for all topics matching what you searched. If people were to be looking up the word 'the' all the time it would put some strain on the database and slow down search results for the hundreds, if not thousands of people using it in tandem. By requiring more characters to be entered you allow the search to prune the topics in a way that returns more accurate results without having to put so much stress in returning hundreds (thousands?) of pages with useless searches.
People would just query 'and', 'the', 'lol', there's a lot of EXTREMELY common three letters words that it's just not worth it with how little benefit it offers. Besides, all of the shorter phrases you mentioned in your original post all have a sub-forums they call home. It's really just not worth it to change something so little with all the drawbacks that come with it.

As for the "lol" "the" etc.. I'm sure a filter could be added.
But I guess if it's too much to ask then no need for it.

But the same could be said about 'haha', 'hehe' etc... really. However, if a filter can't be added I understand what you're saying as that's more words adding to the strain.

But I guess if it's too much to ask then no need for it. He's a very busy man and it's really not worth his time if he's already turned it down. I understand where you're coming from but I doubt he'll implement a lower limit. Plus 'the', 'and', as well as 'but' would be far more common than someone having 'hehe' in their title.
DO NOT DEAL WITH THIS MEMBER
You can do those searches through Google. There's a reason it exists after all.
So should we lower the limit because of five scenarios and their variants? If you want a VCW from HF, you can easily search "VCW HackForums" on Google. It has a lot of HF pages indexed, so you'd get plenty of results.
This would actually be quite useful, but as mentioned above it would not be practical in some ways. I've had issues like this too but I just add a related keyword before or after what I want, it usually brings up useful results. For example "VCW" isnt allowed as you mentioned, but "ewhoring vcw" brings up the exact same results you'd be searching for
I just posted this. Omni just gave me a response. Junk this thread.

I agree with this, but these searches aren't in order of how recent they were posted unlike the search results. A person could be looking for an active thread on those particular topics.

why are you searching for just "cmd"? Learn how to search better. If you're looking do to a specific thing through the command line, search for that.

ewhoring is one of the most pathetic things to do, anyway.

you search "xbl code"

Why would you need to search for just "the"?

There's an entire section dedicated to that. You don't need to search it.
still lurkin. still bitcoin cashin.

I actually really agree with this, I only found out about the char count requirement when trying to type "IRC". I had to have been trying for like 10 mins lol.
You would not get the relevant results you believe you would. The search engine here is dumb and the less your character are for searching the dumber it will be.
